A Water Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, monitoring, and repair of water treatment systems, distribution networks, and related infrastructure. They ensure the safe and efficient operation of water systems to meet health, safety, and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Install and upgrade maintain existing water systems as well as new installations.
Collect and send water samples to the appropriate facilities looking for water chemical and biological contaminants.
Record operational data, meter readings, and test results in logs or databases.
Inspect water lines, tanks, and distribution systems for leaks, damage, or contamination.
Work in the field installing new water mains and the associated components as well as meter pit. Install new water lines as well as use the necessary tools and equipment to join pipe as per client requirements.
Follow all safety regulations and procedures related to water treatment and handling chemicals.
Assist in the installation and repair of water systems and pipelines.

Key Responsibilities: continued:
Laying and Installing Pipes
Excavate trenches to lay new water mains (large pipes that carry water through the city).
Install service lines that connect homes and buildings to the main lines.
Use various materials like PVC, ductile iron, copper, or steel piping depending on the project.

Connecting System Components
Install valves, meters, hydrants, and backflow prevention devices.
Ensure proper sealing and joining of pipe sections using welding, gluing, or mechanical fittings.

Reading and Interpreting Blueprints
Work from engineering drawings and maps to understand where pipes and infrastructure need to be installed.
Identify existing underground utilities to avoid damaging them.

Testing and Inspection
Pressurize and test pipe systems for leaks and performance.
Ensure systems meet safety and municipal code standards.
5.
Maintenance and Repair
Repair leaks or damaged pipes in existing water systems.
Replace old infrastructure as part of system upgrades.

Using Heavy Equipment
Operate equipment like excavators, trenchers, and backhoes to dig and backfill trenches.
Use hand tools to make precise adjustments and installations.
7.
Ensuring Safety and Compliance
Follow local regulations and environmental guidelines.
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe excavation practices (e.g., shoring or trench boxes to prevent collapses).
Ensure compliance with local, provincial and federal water quality regulations.
Maintain documentation for inspections, maintenance, and water quality tests.
