About the opportunity


The Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development (FOLCD) invites applications for a 5-year limited-term appointment as Director of the Transition Year Program. This appointment is anticipated to start on or before September 1, 2025. The Director position is a five-year, limited term appointment with potential for renewal, accompanied by an underlying, probationary/continuing academic appointment at the rank of Instructor.

FOLCD develops and delivers innovative and diverse lifelong learning experiences for more than 5000 students annually to help them navigate the changing world of learning and work. The Transition Year Program (TYP) is designed to prepare high school students, particularly those from communities that have been marginalized. TYP launched in 1970 with the goal of increasing the successful participation of African Nova Scotian and Indigenous students at Dalhousie University. The program has been helping students successfully prepare for all aspects of academic life at Dalhousie.

This position resides in the Faculty of Open Learning & Career Development but will require ongoing collaboration with university and community partners. Responsibilities as Director include curriculum development and oversight of academic affairs of the program, promoting the Transition Year Program to the African Nova Scotian and Indigenous communities, as well as additional community partners; recruiting prospective students; managing the budget of the program in consultation with the faculty finance team; overseeing financial support for current and/or previous TYP students; and the recruitment, hiring, coaching, and supervision of instructors, staff and tutors, among other duties.

The Director will be a member of the faculty's leadership team and will work collaboratively with FOLCD's Dean and Program and Functional Directors to ensure that the TYP is well positioned to offer an exemplary and integrated programming and ensures the success of its faculty, staff and students. This position will also ensure the coordination and implementation of a coordinated approach to other programming and services within the university (health and wellness, student advising, career counselling, etc). There may be an opportunity to Instruct and potentially develop courses in their specific areas of interest.



Required Qualifications

A completed Master's degree in a relevant field of study. Significant experience as a leader, scholar, and administrator within an academic institution. Strong communication skills (written and spoken) with a variety of stakeholder groups. Breadth of experience and proven leadership in equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) and Indigenization. Collegiality and collaborative leadership skills to further build community and engagement across all members of the program, faculty and university Demonstrated excellence (or demonstrated potential for excellence) in teaching at different levels of study.



Preferred qualification

A completed PhD in a relevant field of study is strongly preferred. Demonstrated success in program development and delivery and experience in post-secondary education and working with students from equity deserving groups is strongly preferred.
