Your opportunity:

The Director, Talent Management reports jointly to the Vice-President, Communications and the Director, Talent Management in the Division of People Strategy, Equity & Culture. The Director is a member of the senior management team within the Office of Vice-President, Communications. The incumbent possesses a strong desire to enable U of T to define the leading edge of communications talent management globally, to attract and develop outstanding future communications leaders, and to enhance the University\'s reputation as a leading employer.

The Director is responsible for cultivating a high performance and highly supportive organizational culture, by leading innovative professional development programs and processes to improve the depth, quality, and engagement of communications talent across UTC and other divisions /faculties /colleges. The Director does not have direct staff reports but works in collaboration with members of the Office of the Vice President, Communications and in partnership with the HR Offices in the Divisions. They also draw on materials and assets from the Division of People Strategy, Equity and Culture.

Working with the Vice-President, Communications, the UTC leadership team, and divisional communications leaders, the Director builds a talent pipeline across the University\'s communications community by developing, implementing and evaluating plans, policies, processes, timetables and strategy. Core activities include providing vision and strategic direction for professional development and talent management programs for communications professionals across UTC and divisions/faculties/colleges; developing seminars, coaching, and mentoring programs for divisional communications leaders to support their success and understanding of communications; and supporting efforts to improve recruitment and retention within the communications community. Specifically, this includes developing and implementing orientation and onboarding initiatives for communications staff and academic leaders, reviewing pay equity, strategic succession planning including internship programs, new work to create a divisional EDI strategy, and participating in the strategic identification and recruitment of senior level communications managers and executives, particularly within the divisions; and working with divisional leaders to hone their skills in coaching and mentoring up and coming leaders.

The incumbent ensures that all talent management activities are undertaken to support the achievement of the University\'s mission, vision and strategic objectives.

I. EDUCATION:

University degree required, preferably in HR, business, communications, marketing, social science, or related field. Coursework or academic credentials in organizational development, leadership, adult education a distinct asset.

II. EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of seven to ten (7-10) years\' work experience. Related experience in designing and implementing leadership and talent development initiatives, competency frameworks, performance management, career development, and succession processes, ideally within or for large, decentralized organizations. Meaningful experience in supporting a workplace that promotes strategic workforce development, organizational development, and planning, change and succession management. Experience acquired within a communications and/or post-secondary setting developing a variety of learner-centred programs that support staff success is an asset.

A strategic leader who can manage the process of developing programs from needs analysis through implementation and evaluation. An inclusive leader who is equally comfortable allowing others to lead with support and to learn from those with different skills and competencies. Highly developed analytical and project management experience with the ability to both think big and execute on details. Understands the importance of relationship building and is comfortable engaging with a diversity of people. Approaches the role with the spirit of community engagement. Ability to keep absolute confidentiality in sensitive situations.

Extensive experience with the ability to motivate, coach, train and provide direction to staff, \xe2\x80\x9clead from behind\xe2\x80\x9d to support senior leaders and make a meaningful contribution to the overall organization. A self-starter, able to inspire staff to new levels of achievement. Combines confidence and assertiveness with empathy, tact, and diplomacy in communicating both verbally and in writing with a broad range of stakeholders.

III. SKILLS:

Exceptional oral and written communication, presentation and influential interpersonal skills;

Excellent attention to detail and superb organizational skills, including the ability to set aspirational goals and timelines and to establish an internal system for meeting deadlines, tracking, follow-up, monitoring, and reporting of progress;

Knowledge of best practices in organizational and staff development and adult learning theory and practices (including succession planning, professional, technical and leadership development);

Ability to work in a hectic and results-oriented environment with a strong focus on results; Strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills;

The ability to navigate and be effective within a complex matrixed organization that values collaboration and teamwork as well as individual initiative and creativity;

Demonstrated experience and success motivating and mentoring communications professionals;

The ability to serve as an articulate, credible representative of the University with a variety of constituencies;
