Description:

Precision Medicine (PRiME) at the University of Toronto is a highly specialized research initiative at the University of Toronto that draws on world-class research expertise across multiple academic divisions, affiliated hospitals, regional, national and international academic partners, and commercial organizations. The vision of PRiME is to establish a globally competitive precision medicine hub to advance drug discovery, diagnostics and disease biology research for improving patient health and create long-term economic benefits for society. The initiative will draw upon these strengths to produce high-impact scholarly research, foster translational collaborations to elicit breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, neurodegenerative, metabolic and infectious diseases. It will facilitate the training of new generations of interdisciplinary trainees. PRiME will unify and galvanize the core strengths of Toronto\xe2\x80\x99s research community in drug discovery and diagnostic technologies to further elevate UofT\xe2\x80\x99s global stature.

Reporting to the Academic Director of PRiME, the Director, Strategy & Partnerships brings the strategic operational and programmatic leadership, direction, and oversight in order to contribute to and ensure the success of PRiME. As the senior administrative member of the PRiME team, the incumbent will play a pivotal leadership role in the strategic development and management of the PRiME initiative.
Responsibilities include: development and management of strategic partnerships across institutional, governmental, sectoral and geographic borders; development of a scientific & clinical translation strategy and execution of strategic communications plans; developing and maintaining a PRiME fellowship program; creating a strategy for bringing together and serving researchers from various UofT academic divisions to create an engaged academic PRiME community of affiliates including research intensive hospitals and institutes; preparation of key documents including internal and external progress/impact and financial reports; supporting and managing PRiME governance; finding and applying for research and innovation funding; develops and cultivates strategic partnerships with external entities (both industrial, academic and not-for-profit) across all sectors that will advance PRiME\xe2\x80\x99s priorities; and implementing scientific programs, allocating budgets and creating a hiring strategy. The Director promotes business development, translation and commercialization by ecosystem partnerships (such as with adMare, MITACs, pharma, medtech, TIAP, among others).

Qualifications Required:

Post-Graduate Degree in molecular or cellular biology, precision medicine, pharmacy or pharmacology, biomedical, biochemical engineering or an acceptable combination of education and experience; Project management, business, and/or financial management certificate or an acceptable combination of education and experience; A PhD is highly desirable.

EXPERIENCE:

Ten (10) years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in working within an academic setting with related experience in strategy development and implementation of academic and research programs; Experience in a senior administrative role managing complex relationships, preferably in a University environment or other large organization, is also desirable; Knowledge and experience in organizational governance; Demonstrated experience in financial, human resources and communications management. Experience with translation / commercialization of research is highly desirable.

SKILLS:

Proven ability assessing opportunities in a variety of science and technical disciplines; excellent research, analytical, negotiation, partnership development, project management, organizational and interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; creative problem solving and decision making; mentorship abilities; Computer competency with knowledge of spreadsheet, database, and word processing applications.

OTHER:

Ability to work at the highest strategic levels, to gain and maintain the respect of senior administration and also to take strategy and move it through to tactics and action; Ability to deal with senior University Officers and external stakeholders in a manner which facilitates cooperation and consensus building; Ability to be comfortable, credible and persuasive within academic, government or business environments; ability to initiate, build and nurture academic and research partnerships; Demonstrated effective leadership, motivational and planning abilities; Excellent political acuity, tact, judgment and discretion; Ability to interpret and evaluate policy and procedural requirements; Must be highly self- motivated and sustain a high degree of initiative; Must be a talented and fluent writer, able to concisely summarize information and provide a rationale for action; Must be able to identify and understand emerging issues as well as set and manage priorities.
