Summary of Duties

The Director of Research Finance (DRF) has reporting responsibility to the CFO and oversees both the Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) and the Sunnybrook Research Academy (SRA). The DRF is responsible for the oversight of all financial operations of SRI and SRA. This includes providing leadership, day to day management, developing policies, implementing new initiatives, supporting strategic and leadership discussions and action plans, monitoring financial sustainability and initiating ongoing continuous improvements in support of SRI\xe2\x80\x99s mission.

Responsibilities include oversight of an operating budget of approximately $100 million per year between SRI and SRA, development of both annual and multiyear operating plans, development and funding of all core capital requirements, financial stability of SRI including forecasting of all grant activity to ensure funding levels in support of existing and forecasted expenditure patterns.

Research Grants, Contracts & Clinical Trials

Oversee pre-award and post-award financial management of research grants, contracts and clinical trials awarded to SRI and SRA, and oversee capital budget development and management. This entails review and sign off on all grant applications, set up and ongoing oversight of all successful applications.

Oversight and accountability of SRI and Sunnybrook Research Academy (SRA) Finances

In collaboration with the VP, Research, and CFO provide leadership in developing, costing, communicating, implementing and evaluating the financial operations of both SRI and SRA.

  • Development of the operational and financial elements of SRI\xe2\x80\x99s and SRA\xe2\x80\x99s annual operating plans, business plans and three-year forecasts (including capital plans)
  • Present strategic and operational considerations based on reviewing trend analyses, statistical analyses and growth trajectories.
  • Develop and present financial reports, forecasts and tools for measuring business performance including those pertaining to growth, profitability, sustainability and cost reductions to the SRI and hospital leadership and the board of directors.
  • Report and interpret relevant data so as to provide management with the tools necessary to make informed decisions.
  • Provide in-depth business and financial planning for SRI facilities, including: billing rates review; break even analysis; regulatory compliance; market evaluations; potential opportunity analysis; short and long-term strategic and operational plans; ensure business plans conform to strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee license commitments to SRI, and ensure that companies are paying according to contractual obligations.
  • Accountable for SRI and SRA annual financial statements and yearend audit
Financial Leadership

The DRF oversees financial operations of SRI while ensuring long term viability of the organization including sustainable funding for core operations. This includes operational support for personnel, resources, space, and development of new programs or enhancing existing ones for:
  • All SRI staff
  • Finance member on various SRI committees
  • Finance member on various SRI steering committees
  • Clinical Departments and Divisions in support of clinical funded research positions/activities
  • External organizations (examples include start-ups and third parties requesting services). Board member of FUS Instruments representing Sunnybrook\xe2\x80\x99s interests.
SHSC Interface Management and Oversight

The DRF is responsible for relationship management and partnership with SHSC Corporate and Operational leaders to ensure that SRI Finances align and are consistent with strategic and operational plans of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. This entails ensuring that opportunities to maximize efficiencies between the two entities are explored and secured. Consistency of SRI financial operations, staff pay rates and integration with the equivalent SHSC financial departments is important. Active participation in bi-monthly meetings of the financial directors is key to this integration.

Qualifications/Skills
  • Canadian Accounting Designation (CA/CMA/CGA or equivalent) required
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • A 10 year track record of overseeing the finances and operational aspects of an entity that has annual revenue exceeding $80M is desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and agile while efficiently supporting the organization during periods of change and shifts in strategic goals and objectives
  • Experience in building and leading effective teams
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and supportively across programs and departments
  • Demonstrated skills in problem solving and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement action plans that achieve organizational goals and objectives
  • Demonstrated excellence in thinking broadly and strategically when identifying the needs of SRI/SHSC and creating an action plan to address those needs
