About the team



The Investment Services team manage over $9 billion in assets primarily used to fund teacher benefits. Our investment professionals use their financial skills to perform the day-to-day operations of the investment program.


What you'll do



The Director, Public Markets and Private Credit, is responsible for developing, implementing, and administering the Federation's public market bond and equity programs and private credit program as well as contributing to total portfolio return and management value add. The Director, Public Markets and Private Credit, reports to the Chief Investment Officer and is a key member of the Investment Services leadership team. Additionally, the position leads a team of investment professionals, providing leadership and guidance to ensure tasks are executed effectively.


Responsibilities include:


Lead the research, analysis, and evaluation of investment strategies for public market investments and private credit strategies and make recommendations on the acquisition, retention, and termination of investment mandates that fit within the overall strategic asset mix and risk budgets. Lead the due diligence of investments across asset classes including the assessment, negotiation, and closing of investment relationships. In conjunction with legal counsel, lead the review of legal documents and review financial statements, manager reports, and manager policies. Coordinates transaction execution and the closing of investments aligned with best industry practice. Responsible for the pacing of private credit investments in alignment with strategic targets. Monitor existing investment managers and investments across public fixed income, public equity and private credit portfolios and establish processes to assess managers, their processes and risk management practices. Evaluate performance, including an assessment of potential risk and reward of individual investment strategies within the assigned asset classes. Design and develop investment guidelines, objectives, and procedures for the Federation's public equity and fixed income investments and private credit investments. Develop and recommend investment strategy, guidelines, and objectives for optimizing performance of public equity investments and fixed income investments and private credit investments. Responsible for overseeing in-house asset management of select public market mandates. Oversee relationship management of relevant stakeholders and service providers, including sourcing managers and brokers. Serve as an investment specialist and resource to executive and committee members to further their understanding of public market investments. Travels to annual meetings, conferences and due diligence visits as required. Oversees and mentors investment portfolio managers and analysts and supports the achievement of employees' operational objectives and professional growth. Develop training plans, manage performance, set annual objectives, and prioritize work of public investments team.



What you'll bring




An undergraduate degree in finance, economics, or a related field along with a master's degree or a professional designation (MBA, CPA, CFA). A minimum of ten years of relevant industry experience in investment management, investment banking, portfolio management or consulting is required. Excellent research, financial modelling, analytical and valuation skills. Experience managing direct fixed income or equity investments deemed preferable. Experience leading managers, investment processes, operations and compliance practices. An understanding of fund structures & related accounting and valuation treatment. Superior verbal and written communication skills. Superior interpersonal skills in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff and in promoting a positive work environment. Ability to deal with all situations and issues with integrity and honesty. A high standard of business conduct and ethics. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and team leader. Demonstrated ability to take the initiative. Proactive at identifying and evaluating opportunities to improve organizational processes including generating ideas, approaches or techniques.
