General Overview - Director of Trades



To support a smooth transition, we have a fantastic opportunity for the incoming director of trades as the onboarding includes an overlap period with the current incumbent. This time will allow for a sound knowledge transfer, and continuity of responsibilities as the incoming incumbent steps into the position. Reporting to the CEO, the

Director of Trades

?is accountable for the successful development, implementation, management and growth of the Trades Training and Apprentice Programs, with a mandate to provide?Indigenous individuals?with accredited industry recognized training leading to apprenticeship?certification.? ?Assumes key role for building and maintaining key industry, trade union, training institution and employer partnerships.

Primary Responsibilities



Leadership Team:



Contributes to the implementation of the strategic and long-range plans by providing ideas and expertise that supports the development of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) Develops, conducts a risk analysis, sets timelines, and implements the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) Spearheads the development, revision, implementation and application of Trades policies and procedures with alignment to ACCESS's overall policy and procedure protocols Consistently demonstrates ACCESS management competencies Develops strategic plan, policies and procedures for Trades Department Understanding of how to utilize TRC and UNDRIP to benefit ACCESS programming

Program Leadership:



Increase the number of Indigenous Peoples entering into apprenticeship through outreach and marketing. Support Indigenous people to attain their red seal or qualification certification by providing wrap around supports throughout their apprenticeship Supports Indigenous Peoples to attain Certificates of Qualification or Red Seal Certification. Develop and implement?the program's?annual objectives, timelines and standards. Monitor and evaluate program?outcomes?according to?objectives, standards and contract?terms and within ACCESS mission and values. Assess and deliver Trades programming in alignment with current labour market information to better meet the needs of our clients and employer partners. Develop and review contracts with training institutes for presentation to the President and CEO Prepare reports on Trades Department for Service Canada and the and provide to the Director of Programs for amalgamation with all departments. Participates on ACCESS Marketing Committee to develop branding, maintain the website, produces marketing materials, and social media, both directly and through delegation to other staff.??Develop and coordinate the marketing of all upcoming Trades & Apprenticeship programs. Strong financial skills as required for planning, budgeting, allocating resources and monitoring funds. Pragmatic and sound financial judgement as it relates to financial responsibility. Provides oversight and direction to the Trades team for the recruitment and selection of trainees. Coordinate and schedule programs with other departments and training institutions. Hold staff accountable for maintaining?accurate and current?apprenticeship records?on the Trades Database, summaries, and Accountability Resource Management System (ARMS)

Partnerships and Funding:



Keep apprised of RFPs relevant to the Trades programs and develop tailored proposals. Write grants and proposals and identify/respond to new funding opportunities aligned with the program.?Provide activity reports for all funder groups according to the needs of the funder. Source, develop and maintain key relationships with funders, SkilledTrades BC and including industry leaders, executives,?and community leaders to broaden ACCESS' visibility, to?discuss potential partnerships, support and funding. Build partnerships with government, training institutes, employers, trades organizations, unions, and community groups to provide our clients with industry certified training and connections to employment. Maintain regular connection with primary/key partners, providing timely response to inquiries. Actively network for new partnership through participation on Indigenous committees and attending meetings with interested employers and funders to discuss funding for potential projects and employment for our clients. Participate in discussions, on industry committees, attending events, where such participation to maintain a voice and presence in the community.

Human Resources:



Manage the Trades department and staff by overseeing long-term and day-to-day planning and operations. Supports the human resources function including staff engagement, recruitment, hiring, training and development, evaluation and performance management, corrective action, and discipline. Facilitate team meetings and provide coaching, assistance and support to the team for complex and unique situations. Document informal staff conversations around performance, attendance, code of conduct etc, to identify patterns.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements



Education:



Bachelors' Degree and/or Trades certification, with 5 years' progressive leadership experience in the Construction industry.

Solid?experience?leading a large complex department, developing budgets, building partnerships and managing a team. Solid knowledge and awareness?of the barriers faced by our urban Indigenous Peoples. Strong?strategic and?planning skills, able to build program systems, processes, procedures and controls. Strong ability to identify issues, develop contingency plans, and work through problems to maintain program stability and growth. Ability to apply due diligence and sound judgment for making complex decisions and solving problems. Professional written and verbal communication skills, including developing presentations and speaking to small and large audiences. Skillfully manage unique situations with diplomacy. Excellent ability to develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with staff, partners, funders, institutions and other stakeholders. Solid human resource management knowledge and ability to lead, direct, evaluate and motivate staff and teams to fulfill ACCESS' mission. High proficiency in MS Office, with a strong ability to adapt to changing technology An excellent understanding of the apprenticeship system in British Columbia. Must have valid Class 5 Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
