The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables is responsible for the development, management, conservation and protection of forest, mineral, parks and wildlife resources, and the administration of the province\'s Crown land. As a vital part of the Forestry and Wildlife branch, the Resource Management Division is the primary strategic lead for cross-departmental work to ensure the sustainable conservations, management and use of the province\'s renewable resources, Crown Lands and forests. Ensures that planning, decision making and management action involving the provinces renewable resources are based on the best scientific and traditional knowledge available and ensures that all uses are sustainable.
About Our Opportunity
As the Director of Resource Stewardship, you are the primary lead for all aspects of resource management implementation on Crown lands through legal and partnership agreements with the Mi\'kmaq, forest sector stakeholders and private landowners as well as the effective coordination, planning, and delivery of private land silviculture programs and timber scaling programs and ensuring appropriate development and implementation of wildlife policy in the context of resource stewardship. As the Director of Resource Stewardship, strong leadership is essential in the position to build and maintain respectful relationships, negotiate and facilitate clear direction, enable and inspire leaders, and ensure exceptional collaboration and engagement.
Primary Accountabilities
You are a seasoned professional who will be accountable for the development and management of programs, strategies and policies for the sustainable management and growth of the province\'s renewable resources. These responsibilities include leading a diverse group of professionals on the evaluation, planning, development, and implementation of legislation, policy, research, management strategies and client services for the conservation and sustainable use of Nova Scotia\'s renewable resources. Provides provincial leadership to ensure all applicable Acts, regulations, policy, guidelines standards and codes of practice are complied with in forest management planning and operations and other assigned resources on Crown lands. Accountable to review and make recommendations regarding international, national, provincial, and department policies that influence the delivery of forest resource management programs, both on Crown and private lands, in Nova Scotia.

This position reports to the Executive Director, Forestry and Wildlife Branch.
Qualifications and Experience
A university degree in the field of Natural Resources. as well as several years of progressive management experience in a similar role or an acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience.
The success of this position requires a combination of strong leadership skills, team building and a genuine interest and determination in fulfilling the provincial and departmental goals in forest management. You must have a proven record of creative thinking and applying specialized knowledge of natural resources in the context of government policies. You are familiar with Canada\'s and Nova Scotia\'s natural resources, the role of public policy and public service, science, and current issues with respect to the management of forests in Nova Scotia.
You are a problem solver and a strong communicator who can resolve issues in an ever-changing environment. You are also an innovator who generates, promotes, and implements new ideas, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders and resolving concerns arising from the resulting changes these ideas would produce.
Experience with government, forestry-related business and/or a policy organization will be considered an asset, especially in combination with experience in policy and planning. Demonstrated experience in change management initiatives will also be considered an asset.
