Director Of Policy And Research

Toronto, ON, Canada

Job Description

Who we are

The climate crisis demands bold action. We need to slash our carbon emissions and remove the excess carbon dioxide that is already heating up our planet.

That\xe2\x80\x99s where Carbon Removal Canada comes in. We are a new climate non-profit with a big vision: to make Canada a world leader in scaling carbon removal solutions that can help us reach net-zero emissions and beyond. We are the first group in Canada singularly focused on this mission.

We think Canada has what it takes to be a pioneer in carbon removal. We have the resources, know-how, and the innovation ecosystem to succeed. We also have a responsibility to act as one of the highest per capita emitters of greenhouse gases.

Our goal at Carbon Removal Canada is to shape leading policies that will accelerate the scale-up of carbon removal technologies in Canada while setting a global standard for deploying them in a responsible manner. We will push for smart investments in science and research that will advance the efficacy and integrity of carbon removal solutions. And we will champion solutions that are socially and environmentally responsible, ensuring that they benefit all Canadians and respect Indigenous rights.

We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive movement for carbon removal and intend to elevate voices that are often ignored in climate conversations.

If you share our passion for tackling climate change with cutting-edge solutions that can create jobs and positive social change in Canada and around the world, we would love to hear from you!

Our values

As an early employee of Carbon Removal Canada, you will help shape our values and culture. We are:

  • Entrepreneurial: We work lean, smart, and fast. We collaborate well but also excel at working independently. We challenge the status quo and adapt to change.
  • Curious: We don\xe2\x80\x99t jump to conclusions or take sides. We seek to learn more and find common ground with others. We see obstacles and setbacks as opportunities to grow and innovate.
  • Mission-driven: We are motivated by the positive impact that carbon removal can have on our communities. We care about creating economic, social, and climate benefits through our work.
  • Globally-conscious: We believe Canada should champion an inclusive carbon removal agenda that listens to and elevates voices from the communities and countries impacted the most by climate change despite having done the least to cause it.
  • Generous: We operate with generosity and trust. We support our colleagues through challenges, help our partners achieve their goals, and put public interest before our own.
The role

As Director of Policy and Research, you will help create and shape the innovative policies needed to scale-up carbon removal technologies in Canada.

This role will entail diving deep on innovative policies, regulations, and government programs that have been successful in other geographies or sectors, and designing approaches to adapt them to the unique Canadian carbon removal landscape. The Director will help craft Carbon Removal Canada\'s policy roadmap with internal and external stakeholders, helping the organization prioritize the most impactful policy pathways. This work will involve analyzing data, conducting surveys, and developing reports and presentations that build durable support across a wide range of stakeholders for the rapid and responsible deployment of carbon removal in Canada. Identifying opportunities to strengthen policies and regulations that advance existing carbon removal technologies, while monitoring developments in emerging carbon removal methods that require entirely new policy and regulatory regimes will be central to this role. The Director will enhance the integrity of carbon removal methods by ensuring effective measurement, reporting, and verification systems and standards are in place and that investments in carbon removal are advancing broader environmental and social goals.

This is a remote role, based anywhere in Canada. This position reports to the Executive Director.
