United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 401 is Alberta's largest private sector union representing 32,000 members working in diverse industries such as retail, food processing, beverage production, hospitality, gaming, healthcare and education. We are part of the 1.3-million-member United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, representing working people across North America.

Our growing local union is currently seeking to hire for the position of

General Counsel & Director of Policy and Analysis

located in the Edmonton office. The work location may be negotiable for the right candidate. Travel and mobile work will be required. This role will include: advising local leadership and executive officers on legal matters, labour relations, internal union matters, governance and compliance; overseeing, developing and undertaking a formal lobbying strategy targeting lawmakers and senior officials to ensure the union's policy interests are known and factored into the development and delivery of law, policies and programs; maintaining and improving internal systems to collect, manage and utilize data effectively across union departments; and to assist in day-to-day management of front-line staff in the union's WCB, Legal, and Research departments.

The role requires ongoing positive interaction with the membership and relationship building on behalf of the local union with external stakeholders such as employers, legislative decision-makers, allied organizations, and the general public. You will help create an inclusive and diverse environment for non-union audiences to engage with the local union and build and maintain productive relationships with community partners and allies of the local union.

Applicants must have a valid Class 5 driver's license and a minimum of six (6) years of continuous driving experience, no major convictions, no more than three (3) minor convictions, and no claims/accidents in the last three (3) years. A driver's experience letter may be required. The successful candidate will need to travel, work occasionally on evenings and weekends, with some on call duties.

JOB DESCRIPTION



Collect, analyze and interpret data, policy and law to help UFCW Local 401 make informed decisions and advance the interests of UFCW members. This role involves conducting market and corporate research in the industries and sectors where UFCW members or possible members would be employed

Outreach and relationship building with legislators and senior government officials to lobby for UFCW Local 401 members' best interests and ensure effective, real-time responses to critical situations as they arise

Develop brand awareness/identity for government relations and public relations

Track and regularly advise local union leadership and officers on legal matters and legislative developments in all areas affecting the local union and its members

Respond, develop and refine requests for information from local union officers, making referrals as necessary

Work independently to create complicated queries on regulatory changes in the retail sector, uncover new trends and anomalies, model impacts of policy or regulatory change, and provide quick responses to information needs and union campaigns

Oversee and supervise Local 401 WCB, Legal, and Research ULROs

Oversee and manage in-house and external legal files

Oversee and lead some contract negotiations

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS



Applicants must have the following competencies for this position:

Degree in law and background in social sciences, economics, statistics, or any relevant field demonstrating a strong capacity for research and data analysis

5 years' experience in the labour movement in a Director, Supervisor or Organizing role

5 years' experience in labour litigation

5 years' experience or more in a community organizing role is an asset

Knowledge of ALRB rules and procedures

Experience working with provincial politicians, parties and legislative processes

Effective interpersonal communicator adept at building relationships online and offline

Ability to problem solve and make decisions in real time in a fast-paced environment

Self starter with the ability to manage workflow independently as well as collaboratively

Understanding of privacy law, publicly traded companies, corporate governance, and financial markets is an asset

REMUNERATION



Remuneration and terms and conditions of employment for this position is at the Director level and includes generous benefits and vacation entitlement.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: Up to $138,900.00 per year
