Job Description


The Construction and Equipment Division, a part of the J.D. Irving, Limited group of companies, is a key player in the Atlantic Canadian market. With six operating companies in the division, the group provides heavy lift and mobile crane services, civil construction services, modular homes, wallboard manufacturing, steel and fabrication services, technical field services (mechanical, NDT, survey, etc.), and pump sales, parts, and repair services to its customers.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Director of Human Resources to lead the HR Team for all our Divisional Companies.

As the Director of Human Resources, you are a key partner at the Leadership table for the Construction & Equipment Division. You will be responsible for developing and implementing HR initiatives aligned with the overall business and corporate strategy. You will proactively provide day to day operational advice, consultation, and support in the areas of recruitment, performance management, coaching and employee engagement. Reporting to the Divisional Vice President, with a high degree of contact and interaction with JDI Vice President Human Resources, Divisional General Managers and Operations Leads, this role provides opportunity to lead for success in business outcomes across our companies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a senior member of the Divisional leadership team to execute the people strategy of the organization and the division in collaboration with the Vice President.
  • Partner with General Managers of Divisional companies to support labor relations and ensure key metrics and balanced scorecard results are achieved.
  • Lead and develop the capability of the Divisional HR team and provide sound and engaging leadership.
  • Anticipate and respond to business needs with urgency, actively re-prioritizing to address the most critical items.
  • Problem-solve, using sound judgement, anticipating, communicating, and navigating challenges frequently associated with managing issues and opportunities within complex environments.
  • Maintain close relationships, coordination, and collaboration with executive leaders, directors, people leaders and union officials across the Construction & Equipment Division and JD Irving to meet all program requirements and ensure organization-wide strategies are successfully implemented.
  • Adeptly analyze trends (in our business and industry), human resources best practices and evolving technology to proactively identify HR-related issues to maximize our organizational effectiveness and further enhance our organizational culture.
Qualifications:
  • Education Required: Relevant undergraduate degree.
  • MBA preferred and/or professional CPHR designation or equivalent.
  • Years of Experience Required:
  • 10+ years of human resources experience ideally in construction, heavy industry or manufacturing environment.
  • 5+ years as a senior people leader with an HR team of 5 or more.
  • Depth of knowledge in a wide variety of HR competency areas.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and achieve required objectives.
  • Demonstrated effective organizational, problem-solving, planning and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated use of sound judgment and reliable decision making.
  • Strong organizational skills and a high degree of self-motivation and business acumen.
