The positions of Director of Care work collaboratively with Homes Management Team to plan, organize, coordinate, evaluate and improve the provision of nursing and personal care to residents at Huronview Homes for the Aged. These positions provide leadership for the direct care teams, and support an environment which promotes the mission and vision of the Homes. The Director of Care is responsible for the quality of care provided in the Home, adhering to the Long Term Care Homes Act and Regulations, Excellent Care for All Act, and other related legislation, e.g. Regulated Health Professions Act, College of Nurses Standards, and County by-laws, policies and procedures.

Role and Responsibilities

+ Organizes, guides, monitors, evaluates and improves the quality of resident care, including reviewing programs in the home and addressing any gaps in delivery. Active participant and coach in Quality Improvement initiatives related to mandatory programs (Skin & Wound, Pain, Falls, Restraints, etc.).
+ Responsible to admit and discharge residents to the Home while maintaining maximum occupancy target levels.
+ Reviews, revises and develops policy and innovations for the Department in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team in accordance with Best Practice Guidelines.
+ Responsible to address in a timely manner any findings from Ministry Inspection process related to nursing services delivery, including planning corrective actions and achievement of changes necessary to address the Inspection shortfall.
+ Investigates and reports Critical Incidents within the time frames required by the Ministry.
+ Informs the Administrator of any risk items including resident or family actions, emergency situations, or other potential situations which may put the residents, personnel or home at risk. Participates in emergency management with other homes managers.
+ Understands RAI MDS software and maintains computer literacy on other necessary software, oversees the maintenance of accurate and complete clinical records of residents.
+ Collaborates with the IPAC /Environmental Lead on the Infection Control Program at the Home, including collaboration with Public Health and other members of the management team.
+ Thorough understanding of the Resident's Bill of Rights. Advocates for resident rights within an ethical framework.
+ Assists the Administrator in the development of the annual operating and Capital budget for the nursing department.
+ Plans for and purchases within the Treasury guidelines any capital item required.
+ Provides information to develop the annual staffing schedule for the Home.
+ Participates in attendance management program for nursing personnel, when required.
+ Provides budget to actual variance information to the Administrator. Monitors efficient use of supplies, and cost of staffing deployment.
+ Participates on the Homes Management Team, Professional Advisory Committee and Resident Safety & Quality Committee and other nursing departmental teams.
+ Works closely with Director of Care at the related Huron County Home, to ensure development of the nursing departments are in sync across both sites.
+ Actively participates on internal and/or external committees, providing liaison, cooperation, and coordination of clinical services, including support to the Medical Director of the Home.
+ Provides a monthly written report to the Administrator for submission to County Council regarding activities of the department.
+ Oversees or works collaboratively with Associate Director of Care and IPAC/Environmental Lead at Huronview in the deployment of nursing and Housekeeping staff through the scheduling process. Is responsible for monitoring of sick time, overtime and to approve registered staff absence requests. Works collaboratively with the Human Resources Department of Huron County for the benefit of injured workers, work modifications and return to work plans, as needed.
+ Responds to questions from union stewards and serves as a resource to the negotiating team when required. May need to responds to grievances under Step #1.
+ Provides general orientation to homes personnel as required as a member of the management team. May need to coordinate 'on floor' orientation of nursing personnel.
+ Interacts with Ontario Health at Home, MLTC, Clinton Family Health Team, other Long Term Care Homes, Ministry of Labour and other health care service providers in a positive and effective manner.
+ Works collaboratively (with ADOC and IPAC/Environmental Lead at Huronview) in the management of the nursing department, including selection, placement, promotion, recognition, job postings, performance development, coaching, discipline and recommendation of termination of nursing department personnel.
+ Collaborates with Associate Director of Care and management team to provide ongoing educational opportunities to ensure competency of nursing personnel and to encourage personnel to work to the full scope of practice. Utilizes vendor training opportunities for personnel to reach their maximum potential and knowledge in the nursing field. Encourages all personnel to attend offered educational opportunities and models a continual learning philosophy. Adheres to and models the College of Nurses Practice Standards.
+ Oversee and works collaboratively with the homes Service coordinator to ensure that the is adequately staffed and coordinates labs, appointments and admissions
Qualifications and Education

R.N. or B.Sc.N. with continuing education in Gerontology, Nursing Administration, Long-Term Care or equivalent.
Must be registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
Minimum of three years of progressive nursing management experience in a Gerontology setting, preferably in Long Term Care.
Certified ICP (Infection Control Practitioner).
Preferred Skills:
Excellent communication and written skills, computer skills and demonstrated leadership, collaborative and organizational skills.
Maintains positive relationships with vendors, researches advances in the field, new products, etc., and participates in preferred vendor selection as required.
Maintains a professional manner and as such supports other members of the committees of the homes along with the nursing personnel and contributes in a positive way to the reputation of the Huron County Homes.
At Huronview, to act in a mentorship role to the ADOC and IPAC/Environmental Lead in their role related to staff and staff issues.
Provides leadership to the department including developing departmental team goals in relation to the Strategic Plan for the Homes, and regularly meets with nursing department personnel to review goals, policy, health & safety and other issues as may arise. Delegates clinical and leadership responsibilities to appropriately qualified staff according to applicable legislation.
Working knowledge of the FLTC Act, 2021 and the regulations.
