Job Summary


Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), this position is responsible for managing and overseeing the Assistant Director of Care (ADOC) and nursing staff in the Home, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of resident care in line with the current relevant acts, regulations, and legislation related to the Retirement Homes Act, the Residents' Bill of Rights, applicable legislation and regulations, Villa Italia's policies and procedures, and individual resident care plans.

Job Responsibilities



Operations Management

Oversees and supports the daily operations of the nursing department, including work performed by the ADOC, RPNs, PSWs, and Med Techs. Collaborates with internal departments, community partners, including hospitals, long-term care homes, agency staff, and Ontario Health at Home, to arrange care that best supports the residents' needs. Provide leadership and ongoing training to nursing staff. Must be willing to work the hours necessary to ensure the effective operation of the facility and be prepared to respond to emergencies. Performs business activities to prevent financial losses and damage to Villa Italia's goodwill or reputation. Must prepare nursing schedules in accordance with the applicable Collective Agreement.

Nursing Care Management

Reviews daily shift report and identifies and monitors on-going needs of residents, recommending the appropriate level of care or services for all residents. Completes general health assessments for quality and continuity of care. Visits residents and performs nursing assessments to obtain data pertaining to resident's needs with the goal of developing an individualized care plan. Reviews resident care plans regularly to ensure they are current and reflect the needs of each resident. Arranges appropriate services and programs for all residents, utilizing resources in the community. Plans, schedules, and leads care conference meetings with the resident and family to discuss the plan of action pertaining to the resident's care. Arranges support from a Dietitian as required to ensure that dietary supplements/ changes are prescribed or modified based on the resident's needs. Maintains medical supplies and emergency first aid kits.

Communication

Liaises with Department Managers and frontline staff to foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative workplace environment. Communicates with the residents' family and physician when there is a change of condition (positive and negative). Communicates any changes in the residents' condition with the nursing staff and other Villa Italia team members as appropriate.

Continuous Quality Improvement

Organizes and leads quality improvement projects to ensure best practices in resident care. Maintains regulatory obligations as set by the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Health and Safety

Ensures that all activities support and preserve the health and safety of all residents, staff and stakeholders. Provides emergency first aid to residents and team members when needed. Complies with all health and safety policies and procedures of Villa Italia, the Ministry of Labour, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Attends health and safety training as required.

Organizational Support

Contributes to the development of a supportive intra-agency environment by actively participating as a core member of the management team, taking the lead on special project teams as requested by the Executive Director.

Performance Management

Oversee the performance of the ADOC and the nursing team by conducting ongoing evaluations and supporting staff professional development. Provides supervisory back-up as delegated by the Executive Director.

Skills

Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Minimum of three (3) years' experience in a health care setting, preferably a retirement home. Minimum of two (2) years' experience managing frontline staff in a unionized environment. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience using Point Click Care. Highly developed skills in leadership, team building, organizational development, customer service, and technological proficiency. Current First Aid and CPR certification. Knowledge of current and relevant acts, regulations and legislation for retirement homes, Occupational Health and Safety practices and Employment Standards Act principles and legislation, and any other applicable legislation. Must be resident-focused with exceptional problem-solving and decision-making skills. Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in verbal and written communication skills in English. Other languages (i.e. Italian) are considered an asset. Must provide a complete and current (within six months) criminal reference check with vulnerable sector screening before starting in the home.
