Director of Business Development
to join our senior leadership team.

About the Role
The Director, Business Development, is responsible for the strategic growth and financial sustainability of Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre Inc. (TPASC). This role leads all revenue generation activities across the company including but not limited to membership sales, advertising, sponsorship and partnership development as well as all food service and retail operations. The Director also has responsibility for customer sales and service excellence across the facility, ensuring that the guest experience aligns with TPASC's reputation as a world-class sport and recreation destination.
As a member of the senior leadership team, the Director provides strategic advice and operational leadership, drives revenue generation, and ensures that all business development initiatives align with TPASC's mission and long-term strategic priorities.
The Director will oversee a department responsible for:
Membership sales and acquisition as part of the customer service and customer experience team
Advertising, sponsorships, partnerships, and commercial agreements
Retail and food & beverage services and new initiatives
Business innovation and revenue generation opportunities aligned with programming, events and competitions
Contract management and vendor relations
Staff recruitment, development, and performance management
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Business Leadership & Revenue Generation
Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive business development strategy to drive all revenue opportunities on campus including but not limited to memberships, advertising, sponsorships, partnerships, programming, retail, food & beverage revenue.
Identify, evaluate, and implement new business opportunities, including facility monetization, joint ventures, partnerships, and ancillary services.
Create pricing models, packages, and incentives to maximize utilization and profitability across facilities, programs, and services.
Establish annual and long-term financial targets for all revenue categories and ensure consistent achievement.
Customer Service, Customer Experience and Membership Growth & Retention
Develop strategies to drive new member acquisition across university, community, and sport audiences.
Oversee retention initiatives, member engagement programs, and customer loyalty systems.
Partner with marketing and communications teams to design campaigns and digital strategies to increase membership visibility and value.
Regularly analyze membership data and trends to adjust offerings and improve satisfaction.
Commercial Partnerships
Oversee the negotiation, management, execution and renewal of all commercial agreements.
Ensure delivery of high-value, mutually beneficial relationships with all partners including but not limited to members, corporate advertisers and sponsors, sport organizations, and community partners.
Provide strategic direction and oversight to the Manager, Partnerships & Community Outreach, ensuring outreach and partnership activities align with TPASC's business development goals.
Customer Service & Food Services Oversight
Lead the facility-wide customer service strategy, fostering a culture of responsiveness, professionalism, and guest satisfaction.
Oversee all retail and food & beverage operations, ensuring profitability, quality, efficiency, and alignment with customer expectations.
Monitor and optimize food and beverage financial performance, including pricing strategy, cost control, and vendor negotiations to maximize net revenue.
Monitor vendor and service contracts, ensuring compliance with agreements, standards, and performance targets.
Programming & Event Monetization
Work with programming and event management teams to optimize revenue from sport, recreation, and entertainment events.
Introduce innovative programming models that generate revenue while advancing TPASC's mission.
Ensure rental, hosting, and partnership agreements are structured to maximize financial and strategic outcomes.
Collaborate with all levels of sport (community, regional, provincial, national and international) to secure long-term event commitments and high-performance training opportunities.
Financial Management
Generate new revenues for the facility through innovative business development opportunities, with a focus on improving profitability in areas such as food and beverage, retail, and sponsorships.
Develop, manage, and report on departmental budgets, including forecasting and monitoring revenues and expenditures.
Conduct market research and financial analysis to support decision-making and identify emerging trends.
Staff Leadership & Development
Build and lead a high-performing business development team, fostering collaboration and accountability.
Oversee staff recruitment, training, performance management, and succession planning for their department.
Monitor performance, support professional development, and manage employee relations, including investigations and disciplinary processes where required.
Assign tasks and responsibilities based on program requirements, skills, and available resources.
Compliance & Organizational Participation
Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Rights Code, Employment Standards Act).
Participate as a member of the Privacy Breach Response Team, fulfilling duties as required.
Collaborate with other Directors and senior managers to ensure alignment of business development initiatives with organizational priorities.
Oversee the use of technology and systems to support business development, customer service, and operational efficiency and other duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience:
University degree in Business Administration, Sport Management, or a related field; graduate degree in business or management an asset.
10+ years of progressive leadership experience in business development, sponsorship, partnerships, or commercial services, ideally within a sport, recreation, or venue management environment.
Proven track record of revenue generation, sponsorship development, and contract management.
Strong business acumen with demonstrated analytical, financial, and strategic planning skills.
Proven leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.
Experience overseeing customer service and/or food & beverage operations in a complex organization.
Ability to work effectively with multiple and competing priorities.
Experience managing conflict and leading investigations with fairness and discretion.
Superior written and verbal communication, presentation, and report preparation skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and other business applications.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
