Our client Giant Step is looking for a Director of Adult Educational and Vocational Services (maternity leave replacement).
Giant Steps includes a school program at the preschool, elementary and high school levels. We also offer specialized services in autism, Adult Education Services, and a Resource and Training Centre. Founded in 1980, the school is a not-for-profit, private special education institution, funded by the Ministry of Education of Quebec (MEQ). The students follow an individualized program based on their needs and abilities. Our approach is highly specialized, intensive, and interdisciplinary. We offer classes in both French and English.
Giant Steps plays an important role in advancing employment opportunities for autistic individuals with important partnerships with industry-leading organizations such as Loblaw Companies Ltd (Maxi and Provigo), Fairmont Hotels, and Groupe St-Hubert.
As the delivery partner of the federally-funded Ready, Willing and Able employment program, Giant Steps works closely with employers and an ecosystem of specialized employment agency partners to match autistic candidates to available positions.
Role
The Director of Adult Education and Professional Services is responsible for the pedagogical and administrative management and for maintaining high quality services for autistic adults. The person in charge must promote the academic success of all students in accordance with the rules of the Ministry of Education of Quebec (MEQ). The person will be responsible for promoting inclusive hiring among businesses in the community, as well as finding new industry-based partners. The person will also be in charge to ensure progress of learning for employment readiness as well as social skills development to optimize the success of inclusion.
The Director will play a crucial role in the development of any social enterprise initiatives to provide additional learning opportunities for the students.
Responsibilities
Management
- Develops the strategic planning for the Adult Education and Professional Services Pillar of the Giant Steps Autism Centre
- Creates the curriculum and training program for autistic adults according to the standards of the MEQ
- Along with the Adult Services team, defines and monitors the objectives to be achieved of each individualized education plan
- Along with the management team, creates internal policies and procedures for the Adult Education and Professional Services Pillar
- Collaborate with other Giant Steps stakeholders to ensure the success if the Pillar;
- Responsible for and manages the human, financial, material, and informational resources of the pillar
Pedagogy and Professional Development
- Evaluates the needs of the adult Pillar
- Chooses the appropriate pedagogical strategies
- Implements the necessary didactic material
- Develops relationships with employment organizations and/or employment development
- Organizes internship programs, industry visits and finds new partners
- Informs, advises, and supports employers when needed
- Involves parents when necessary, or applicable
- Collaborates with the adult services departments of the Montreal area Service Centres, the Transition from School to Active Life (TSAL) department, the employability program staff and the Resource and Training Centre
- Develops adapted extracurricular activities in collaboration with the Resource and Training Centre
Team Management
- Manages, coaches, and supports the adult team pillar and RWA, St-Hubert and Polaris teams
- Maintains a healthy work environment
- Responsible for team meetings
Requirements
- Masters degree or Bachelor\'s degree in Education, specialty in Adult Education, Management or any pertinent field;
- Valid Teaching Certificate issued by the Province of Quebec or other equivalent degree, is considered an asset
- 8 years experience in a relevant field
- 5 years experience managing a mid-size to large team
- Bilingualism is essential; French and English
- Good knowledge of autism and/or intellectual delays)
- Good knowledge of Adult Education Programs
- Business oriented is an asset.
