Avenir Energy's Director of Accounting is responsible for balance sheet integrity, and maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of all assets, liabilities, and equity. The Director of Accounting will partner with senior leadership to support decision-making, manage risk, and enhance profitability in a high-volume, asset-intensive, and highly regulated industry.



Key Responsibilities


Financial Leadership & Strategy

Direct and oversee the accounting department, including accounts payable, general ledger and tax functions. Provide accurate and timely financial reporting to senior management and external stakeholders. Support strategic decision-making through analysis of profitability, cash flow, and financial forecasts. Ensure alignment of accounting practices with the company's strategic and operational goals. Developing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures to ensure efficiency and consistency in financial operations.


Compliance, Audit, and Risk Management

Coordinate monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring compliance with IFRS. Reconciling cash accounts with bank statements to ensure accuracy, identify discrepancies, and resolve any issues in a timely manner. Together with our outsourced tax expert, ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal tax regulations. Preparing and filing tax returns and coordinating with external auditors and tax consultants.


Technology & Process Improvement

Oversee financial systems (ERP, fuel management/accounting software, dispatch and logistics systems) to ensure integration and accuracy. Drive automation and process improvements in financial reporting and compliance functions.


Leadership & Team Development

Manage and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. Establish clear performance goals and provide professional development opportunities. Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, HR, IT and sales to support the business with accurate financial insights.


Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration 8+ years of experience in progressive finance leadership roles 2+ years leadership experience CPA Designation Strong communications, technology, analytical and management skills Knowledge of NetSuite and/or IFRS Knowledge of Canadian tax and reporting compliance
