Job Description

The Director, Navy Business Development, will be responsible for contributing to growing Seaspan Shipyards business by finding new opportunities in target market segments (specifically the Royal Canadian Navy and other navies) and then developing and leading the capture strategy and plans for those opportunities. Key to this role will be a strategic approach to understanding the breadth and complexity of our customer's needs and leading the development of strategies and solutions to meet those needs - both technical and non-technical. Working as part of the broader multi-disciplinary Seaspan team, this role will require direct leadership of small capture teams growing to larger temporary teams during proposal activity and collaborative interfaces to many other departments and teams within Seaspan.

Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement



What you'll do



Drives future growth for the company through disciplined but creative business development. Leads activities to find and develop opportunities both with new potential customers and with existing customers. Provides leadership to capture teams and proposal teams. Maintains key business development contacts with current and potential customers. Leads and drive opportunities through the Seaspan business development process and lifecycle from opportunity identification through to contract award including approval gates between each phase. Develop, maintain and implement full capture strategies and plans for each approved opportunity. Builds and lead capture teams and proposal teams as required for each approved opportunity. Interfaces with other departments and teams in the Seaspan organization to achieve objectives in a manner aligned with overall Seaspan priorities, strategies and processes. Provides leadership, creativity and drive to find solutions that meet customer needs that are acceptable to Seaspan.

What you'll bring



10+ years of professional industry experience advancing complex new business development strategies and bid proposals in the shipbuilding industry or in a complex defence, aerospace or systems development, manufacturing or construction industry. Experience with Canadian Government procurement strongly preferred Experience with Royal Canadian Navy procurement preferred. University degree in a relevant area preferred. Proven track record of identifying and closing on new business opportunities in government procurement markets. Experience leading and closing complex opportunities with contract values over $5M and ideally over $50M. Broad understanding of technical, programmatic, financial and commercial aspects of complex deals. Experience with forming and maintaining strategic industry partnerships and supplier arrangements as part of a capture strategy. This job is both strategic and tactical and requires substantial leadership in market/customer strategy and opportunity capture. Multi-faceted leadership skills applicable to direct leadership roles and influential leadership roles. Ability to work in a highly flexible and fluid environment and maintain calm and rational thinking and reasoning at all times. Demonstrated ability to communicate with a variety of stakeholders and the ability to respond to stakeholder needs strategically and tactfully. Exceptional interpersonal skills, superior oral and written capabilities, including the ability to build professional relationships with government and industry partners. Skilled at advocacy, influence, and persuasion, with the able to convince others to act on information or recommendations based on compelling logic or common best interests. Knowledge of complex government markets. Strong knowledge and expertise with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Project and Excel). Self-starter with good organizational skills who can work both independently and as a member of a team. Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with customers, partners, suppliers and within Seaspan.

The estimated salary for this position is $184,500 - $225,500. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience, as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
