Role Overview

Are you a lawyer with an interest in commercial leasing, but don\xe2\x80\x99t want to just pump out lease after lease? Do you have experience practicing various aspects of law related to commercial leasing, real estate and redevelopment work? Are you interested in the world of retail operations? If so, the Loblaw Real Estate legal team is the place for you! We are an energetic team of lawyers, law clerks and assistants who interact and work closely with one of the largest leasing, real estate, construction and maintenance business teams in Canada. We don\xe2\x80\x99t just focus on the law, we also help our business colleagues provide the best physical and operational network of grocery and drug stores in the country. From navigating day-to-day tenant operational leasing issues, to dealing with construction site matters, to collaborating on complex redevelopment projects with our landlords, we work on a wide array of projects in a fast-paced environment, and no day is ever the same. We consider ourselves first and foremost retail lawyers, who just happen to practice commercial leasing and real estate law.

We are currently seeking a lawyer with a strong interest and experience in the retail industry, commercial leasing, construction/redevelopment projects and real estate transactions to join our legal department. Reporting to the Senior Director, Legal Counsel for Loblaw Real Estate, the successful candidate will provide legal services to many business groups within Loblaw and Shoppers on a wide variety of matters that touch upon real estate. Loblaw offers an agile, hybrid work environment, with the opportunity to work in part remotely, and in part in-person, at Loblaw\xe2\x80\x99s head office in Brampton or Loblaw\xe2\x80\x99s various other office locations in the GTA.

The responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Reviewing, negotiating and drafting commercial leasing documents including ground leases, mixed-use development leases, multi-tenant shopping centre leases, offers, amendments, assignments, subleases and consents on behalf of Loblaw and Shoppers primarily as tenant, but also as a landlord of our in-store tenants
  • Preparing documentation and conducting due diligence for sale/leaseback transactions with our largest landlord, Choice Properties
  • Negotiating and drafting documentation in relation to complex redevelopment projects that impact the operation of our grocery stores and pharmacies
  • Performing real estate/leasing due diligence and documentation for cross-functional projects and key initiatives that involve the Loblaw and Shoppers real estate portfolios
  • Developing creative solutions and drafting or reviewing real estate/leasing documentation for our e-commerce and other retail divisions
  • Involvement in expropriations work, municipal development work, and environmental matters
  • Conducting analysis and preparing legal opinions regarding the interpretation of various real estate related documents and legislation
  • Advising business colleagues and drafting correspondence in relation to landlord/tenant disputes
What You\xe2\x80\x99ll Need:
  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • 5+ years post-call experience obtained at a major law firm or corporation either: (1) primarily in the area of commercial leasing or (2) as a generalist real estate lawyer having had exposure to commercial leasing, real estate transactional work, and redevelopment work
  • Experience in environmental, construction and/or regulatory law is an asset
