Energy Safety Canada (ESC) is the national safety association for the energy industry. With roots dating back to 1949, ESC is a unique not-for-profit organization that serves the industry through education, resources and engagement to help keep Canadian energy workers safe.

  • The Director, Industry Development & Support (ID&S) is a key role responsible for providing leadership to the organization. You are a transformational leader, who can lead virtual, cross-functional teams with a common vision and objective. You will impact health and safety at an industry level as leader of:
  • A team that develops resources and tool to support companies to improve safety performance.
  • Regional offices in Calgary, BC, Fort McMurray and Saskatchewan.
  • A team that delivers the Certificate of Recognition (COR) program for Canada\xe2\x80\x99s energy industry.
  • ESC\xe2\x80\x99s internal Health and Safety Management System.
The Director, ID&S reports to the Vice President, Operations & Safety Centre of Excellence. The successful candidate has a proven track record and experience as a trusted leader in the energy industry. What will you do:
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to members of the ID&S team. Lead the team in goal setting, conduct regular one-on-one check-ins with direct reports, establish two-way communication with the team and initiate performance management in a timely matter, when required. Hiring and onboarding new employee, as required.
  • Oversee delivery, maintenance and assessment of departmental Operational Management Manuals (OMM) outlining critical processes and procedures in alignment with ESC\xe2\x80\x99s Operational Management System. Ensure ID&S departments are supported, delivered and evaluated in accordance with the OMM, privacy standards and ESC\xe2\x80\x99s mission. Make recommendations to increase departmental efficiency and stakeholder satisfaction through process improvements.
  • Oversee development and delivery of department operational plans in alignment with ESC\xe2\x80\x99s strategic plan. Review department performance to monitor progress of ID&S metrics and delivery of initiatives/projects to set timelines, budgets in adherence to the ESC Project Management System. Provide guidance and oversite to annual planning process.
  • Liaise with industry stakeholders by meeting regularly with industry associations, oil and gas industry companies, regulators and other stakeholders to assist in the advancement of ESC\xe2\x80\x99s strategic priorities and operational activities. Lead contact for WCB data reporting.
  • Oversee departmental budget, forecasting and contractor management functions. Ensure a sound knowledge of departmental budgets and provide guidance to budget owners on activity-based forecasting. Understand critical contracts within the ID&S department and ensure contractor management practices are in alignment with ESC\xe2\x80\x99s standards.
  • Plan and facilitate the activities of the ESC Advisory Committee and attend regional advisory meetings.
  • Steward delivery of the ESC health and safety management system including completion of the annual assurance process (COR audit).
What you will need:
  • Post-secondary degree, preferably a master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in health and safety, business administration or a related field
  • Recognized safety designation such as CRSP or CSP
  • 10+ years working in a management role, preferably in the oil and gas industry
  • Excellent team management and supervisory skills

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
