VCH\xe2\x80\x99s Indigenous Health team works with staff and physicians across all programs and departments to provide strategic leadership, partner collaboration and community engagement to assist VCH to become a more culturally competent and safe organization.

This complex but rewarding role is responsible for providing clear direction for the culturally safe provision of care for Indigenous clients using Indigenous Cultural Safety programs and services in all Vancouver Coastal Health facilities; provides leadership to Mental Health Specialists and other external and internal leasers that support the ongoing provision and implementation of no only culturally safe but relevant services for Indigenous clients that is culturally safe and appropriate.

As a Director, Indigenous Cultural Safety & Learning Programs with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Be is responsible for developing, planning, implementing and overseeing policies for Vancouver Coastal Health\xe2\x80\x99s Indigenous Cultural Safety Strategy.
  • Be responsible and accountable for providing leadership, operational support and direction in the successful development and delivery of Indigenous Cultural Safety initiatives that are both culturally safe and in alignment with both Indigenous practices and with organizational priorities.
  • Provide oversight and direction to the Indigenous Health Indigenous Cultural Safety team as well as the Aboriginal Elder\xe2\x80\x99s In Residence program that supports all VCH staff in the health authority.
  • Provide leadership and consultation to advance organizational strategic priorities in Cultural Safety and Wellness with the priority to implement programs that will improve the wellness of Aboriginal people throughout Vancouver Coastal Health\xe2\x80\x99s Community of Care.
Qualifications

Education & Experience
  • A Masters\xe2\x80\x99 degree in a health \xe2\x80\x93related or business field
  • Seven to ten (7 to 10) year\xe2\x80\x99s recent, related experience that includes managing strategic and operational projects and facilitating and managing consultation processes with a wide group of stakeholders, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Minimum of five (5) years working for an Indigenous organization/program that includes interacting and developing relationships with Indigenous people and Indigenous communities as well as government agencies and ministries along with extensive understanding and knowledge of Indigenous culture and specifically Vancouver Coastal Health region\xe2\x80\x99s First Nation\xe2\x80\x99s cultures.
  • Preference given to candidates identifying as Indigenous including First Nations, Metis and Inuit.
Knowledge & Abilities
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Culture and History in BC and Canada.
  • In depth knowledge of current and future-oriented Indigenous Cultural Safety healthcare issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, guide and facilitate change as well as anticipated future change in service delivery and develop strategies that optimize resource to improve efficiency and quality of care.
  • Demonstrated highly specialized skills in assessing and managing conflict and communication in often cross cultural, emotionally charged, and complex learning environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Indigenous communities and Elders to build positive and mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Makes independent decisions using analytical and problem solving skills while remaining calm, alert and high-functioning in stressful situations.
  • Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of complex health care operations, and department\xe2\x80\x99s goals and objectives to deliver strategic communications.
  • Applies and shares strategic knowledge about indigenous culture and priorities to build partnerships, understanding and advance quality improvement.
  • Uses broad knowledge of the indigenous community\xe2\x80\x99s social, political and economic environment in the provision of strategic advice to stakeholders across VCH relating to government, community and media communications.
  • Applies solid knowledge of best practice business methods to help advance Indigenous culture, executive communications, executive engagement with frontline staff, corporate business practices and online and in-person communications.
  • Uses advanced skills and experience in journalistic and business writing, as well as the skill to develop compelling written and multimedia presentations to target and engage a variety of external and internal stakeholders.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
