The Director, External Scientific Partnerships is a member of the Oncology Business Unit (OBU) Global Medical Affairs (GMA) External Scientific Partnerships Team within the Evidence Generation & Partnerships organization. The incumbent is accountable to lead the development and implementation of an integrated insights-informed Tumor Area (TA) and above-TA external scientific engagement partnership strategy focused on delivering impact to strengthen AstraZeneca\xe2\x80\x99s Oncology leadership and bridge Science to Care. The incumbent will report to the Executive Director of External Scientific Partnerships.

The Director of External Scientific Partnerships will utilize her/his extensive expertise in oncology and academic alliances management to strengthen internal alignment in order to define and implement scientific external engagement plans to advance medical strategy. The Director of External Scientific Partnerships is one of the key AstraZeneca scientific contacts for the strategic academic players such as Cancer Centers, Cooperative Groups, National Cancer Bodies and Oncology Associations/Societies in any region of interest.

The Director of External Scientific Partnerships will work in a matrix environment within Oncology Medical Affairs (Global/Region/Local) and other contributing functions such as Oncology R&D, Corporate Affairs (Global Policy & Patient Affairs) and Commercial teams to ensure effective design and subsequent implementation of the External Scientific Partnerships strategy.

Major Responsibilities:

Contribute as a strategic tumor-aligned cross-functional GMA/OBU partner to accelerate clinical practice change, maximize patient impact and improve outcomes through:

Close collaboration with Tumor Area GMA team to proactively prioritize evidence and multidisciplinary care gaps and mitigate through the development of innovative collaborative research models (including building scientific ecosystems with key experts and institutions) to maximize the value of Oncology portfolio

Engagement with Medical Associations and Societies to improve Tumor Area (TA) and above-TA education for earlier identification, diagnosis and treatment and for optimal patient management and experience

Engagement with health policy makers / systems (in collaboration with Corporate Affairs) and meaningful participation in policy initiatives to shape narratives (above-TA) promoting equity and access in underserved communities worldwide, clinical trial diversity and healthcare system sustainability and resilience

Maintain awareness of Cooperative Groups, National Cancer Bodies and Oncology Associations/Societies leadership, strategy and capabilities.

Collaborate with Global/Region/Country Medical Affairs team to ensure medical insights inform priorities to build a relevant and impactful external engagement strategy.

Bridge with External R&D and R&D teams to align on a unified scientific external engagement across the whole organization.

Manage budget and vendor oversight associated with external activities.

Maintain compliance with all company compliance and regulatory guidelines governing external interactions.

Minimum Requirements:

Doctorate in Science, Medicine, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, or equivalent required

7 years of experience in medical affairs strategy, clinical development, and/or evidence generation in collaboration with external partners

Strong experience in establishing and managing collaborations with academic entities

Strong experience in clinical and non-clinical research in Oncology

Existing peer-level Oncology key external expert (KEE) relationships

Strong interpersonal and project management skills with
5 years of experience in a matrix environment

Strong knowledge of public-private partnerships

Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment

High level knowledge/awareness of the overall pharmaceutical product development process

Working knowledge of FDA/EMA requirements

Strong work ethic and high integrity standards

Preferred Requirements:

Substantial experience in a strategy-setting role in Pharma

Global experience within the pharmaceutical industry (
7 years)

Good understanding of Intellectual property regulation

Good knowledge in the assigned Tumor Area

Knowledge of strategic cancer sites and cooperative groups in US, EU & Asia
