Director, Estimating

Our client is searching for a Director, Estimating who will play a critical role in their ability to engage customers, secure contracts and drive project success. A successful candidate will be able to drive the need for competitive pricing while balancing execution strategies, profitability, and risk management. This role requires effective communication, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of the industry.

Your success will be defined by your ability to:

  • Manage and drive team excellence in the Estimating and Tender teams, including bid coordinators, estimators, and proposal writers, and subject matter experts. Ensure effective collaboration and coordination among team members.
  • Develop and implement a strategic approach to cost estimation and project tender proposals. This includes analyzing market trends, competition, and the organization\xe2\x80\x99s strengths and weaknesses to determine which opportunities to pursue.
  • Direct the preparation and submission of competitive bid proposals, ensuring that they align with the client\xe2\x80\x99s requirements and objectives. This includes reviewing technical content and pricing, and other elements of the proposal
  • Oversee the preparation of accurate and comprehensive cost estimates and proposal documents for various projects. Liaise directly with other departments, as required, to enhance cost estimating and proposal drafts.
  • Identify and assess potential risks associated with specific bids, including legal, financial, and operational risks. Develop strategies to mitigate these risks and increase the likelihood of winning contracts.
  • Formalize and implement department processes including the standardization of bid software, pricing methods and proposal coordination
  • Lead bid price reviews with senior management prior to pricing submission
  • Maintain company rates and bid related financial analysis for regions across Canada. Conduct rate reviews on a quarterly basis to ensure competitiveness using historical data, industry benchmarks, and market analysis to inform cost estimates. Continuously update cost databases and pricing models.
  • Implement and maintain quality control processes to ensure the accuracy and consistency of cost estimates. Ensure that all bid submissions adhere to legal and ethical standards, as well as the organization\xe2\x80\x99s quality assurance and compliance guidelines.
  • Stay up to date with industry specific estimating software and tools. Evaluate and implement new technologies that can improve the accuracy and efficiency of cost estimation processes
  • Evaluate the performance of past bids, analyzing win-loss rations, reasons for success or failure, and areas for improvement. Use this data to refine bidding strategies.
  • Manage the budget for the department, including resource allocation to maximize the organization\xe2\x80\x99s competitiveness in the bidding process.
  • Communicate cost estimation results to clients, stakeholders, and project teams, ensuring transparency and understanding. Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, understanding their needs and expectations. Tailor bid proposals to address these requirements effectively.
  • Provide input for financial forecasting and budgeting processes based on cost estimation data
  • Conduct research to identify new bidding opportunities, market trends, and emerging customer needs. Stay informed about industry developments that could impact bidding strategies.
Your strengths include:
  • 15+ years of estimating, cost control and/or engineering with a minimum of 7 years estimating experience in projects ranging from $50M to $500M
  • Understanding of construction documents and the ability to assess the level of completeness
  • Technical knowledge of estimating practices, techniques and equipment
  • Project Management experience and/or training an asset
  • Supply Chain Management experience and/or training an asset
  • Experience in Hard Dollar and/or Heavy Bid estimating systems is an asset
  • Knowledge of construction costs and budgets, ability to develop a project schedule
  • Proficient computer skills; Microsoft Word, Outlook, Project, and Excel
  • Able to read drawings and specifications
  • Ability to validate proposals, manage multiple priorities and work under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Ability to identify issues, looks beyond the immediate problem to the wider implications and generates possible solutions
  • Verifiable work references demonstrating exceptional skills and achievements
  • Capable of adapting information/style to the audience, explains difficult information clearly and influences and persuades other towards consensus agreement in straightforward situations
