The opportunity

Reporting to the Global Head of Enterprise Risk Management and collaborating extensively with our Sustainability group, you will lead the enhancement of environment and social (E&S) risk integration across Manulife. You will play a key role in the identification, governance, and mitigation of E&S risks across Manulife\xe2\x80\x99s global segments and functions as subject matter expert on E&S and risk management. Leveraging your expertise in both climate and nature as well as social themes, you will help Manulife stay informed on emerging ESG issues that could lead to strategic, market, credit, product and/or operational risk.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the integration of environmental risks (including both climate and nature related risks) and social risks into the wider Enterprise/Operational Risk Management frameworks
  • Develop a social risk management program across the enterprise to address emerging and evolving social risks
  • Advise business units on E&S risk issues across Manulife\xe2\x80\x99s principal risks and function as the subject matter expert for the organization on E&S risk matters
  • Lead the operationalization of Manulife\xe2\x80\x99s Environmental Risk Policy across global operations and business segments, including the integration of the environmental risk appetite across the organization
  • Embed and maintain necessary compliance and governance processes to ensure adherence to the Environmental Risk Policy across the organization
  • Responsible for providing qualitative and quantitative expertise on climate risk identification, assessment, measurement, and monitoring, including the development and integration of necessary tools
  • Guiding business segments with the quantification of material E&S risks
  • Ensure on-going adherence to global regulatory requirements within Manulife\xe2\x80\x99s operational regions (Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, Monetary Authority of Singapore, Securities and Exchange Commission, etc.) and contribute to relevant regulatory forums (i.e., pilots, surveys, etc.)
  • Responsible for developing an enterprise-wide scenario analysis tool and climate risk modelling program to assess both physical and transition risks across the organization
  • Work with first line, second line and third line functions to enhance E&S risk management and ensure the risks are governed appropriately
  • Define any new requirements for related risk policies and support the integration of climate and social risks across existing policies
  • Play a critical role in Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) and Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD) related work across the organization
  • Support with on-going rating agency and disclosure requirements on E&S risk related matters, including regulatory responses
  • On-going stakeholder management and cross collaboration with enterprise risk teams, DE&I, Global Sustainability, and other business segments to enhance E&S risk management practices
  • Actively work to advance E&S risk management and make progress towards addressing E&S risks across the enterprise
  • Represent Manulife in industry forums and be an active member of the sector as it relates to E&S risk management
  • On-going monitoring and reporting of the evolving ESG risk landscape, including upcoming regulatory risks, and escalating relevant risks to leadership through on-going communication
Job Requirements:
  • Education in a relevant field of study (Sustainability/Environment/Climate, Risk Management, Business, Economics), preferable at graduate level
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in a related discipline. Experience in the financial sector in large complex institutions is considered a strong asset
  • Strong conceptual, strategic thinker and self-starter. Experience with influencing stakeholders at all levels of seniority internally and externally, collaborate effectively and drive results with impact and efficiency.
  • Understanding of ESG risks, specifically environmental risks (climate/nature/physical/ transition/systemic), and social risks, as well as knowledge of emerging E&S issues - including climate risk guidance (TCFD, TNFD, OSFI B15) and guidance on social risks, as well as other regulatory/external guidelines and recommendations is a strong asset
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance existing organizational processes and implement new approaches
  • Strong people skills and excellent cross functional communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex topics in simple language

Salary & Benefits

The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

Primary Location Toronto, Ontario

Salary range is expected to be between $100,500.00 CAD - $180,900.00 CAD
