Position Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic tax professional to join the Great-West Lifeco (Lifeco) corporate tax team. As the Director, International Taxation, you will assist with tax structuring and tax planning for alternative investments in private equity funds and private debt transactions, and oversee other international tax work (compliance, surplus, tax audits) for a large group of foreign affiliates.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, International Taxation, you will collaborate in investigating, researching, and analyzing income tax issues for the purpose of strategic investments, special transactions, and acquisition structuring.
Accountabilities:

  • Supporting the Assistant Vice President with all aspects of complex investments of the company including structuring private equity transactions, Canadian and foreign affiliate tax compliance, and tax audit activity.
  • Structuring - ensure private equity and capital market transactions are structured effectively from a Canadian and foreign affiliate tax perspective; liaise with foreign tax jurisdiction teams;
  • Compliance - support compliance team by identifying Canadian tax compliance arising from private equity investments, co-ordinate to ensure information required from private equity investments is attained to file Canadian tax returns, and review of T1134 forms related to private equity investments; and
  • Tax Audits - manage tax audits and respond to tax queries from the Canada Revenue Agency.
  • Effectively coordinating with Finance, Treasury, Tax and Legal teams in various jurisdictions for alternative investments transactions.
  • Staying up to date on tax legislative and OECD Pillar Two developments, and tax authority decisions, and applying this knowledge to complex situations.
  • Communicating with internal stakeholders and advisors in respect of Canadian and international tax matters.
  • Mentoring team members in a manner that cultivates a dynamic learning environment.
  • Assisting other members of the global tax team on various initiatives.
Qualifications and Competencies:
  • Tax Professional with at least 6+ years of tax experience in public accounting or legal firm or equivalent industry experience. Experience with investing in private equity is advantageous.
  • Understanding and experience in IFRS accounting is helpful.
  • University degree in accounting or taxation, or completion of a professional accounting designation (or equivalent) is helpful.
  • Completion of Parts I to III of the CPA In-Depth Tax Program or Master of Taxation.
  • Excellent project management skills and efficient approach to handling complex assignments.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently in a very fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate complex tax matters in a clear and concise manner

The base salary for this position is between $92,100 - $170,500 annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc).
