The Opportunity

We are looking for a senior leader to join our External Engagement team. As a Director, Community Relations you build trust and support BC Ferries initiatives and ensure communities and interested/impacted groups are well informed and engaged.

The Role


Reporting to the Executive Director, External Engagement, you add value and are energized by:


Providing strategic advice and guidance to BC Ferries staff and leading the community engagement strategy Developing priorities and goals related to community relations and interested / impacted group relations in the organization, in collaboration with Executive Director and Vice President, Public Affairs and Marketing Budget tracking and allocation and leading the community investment function Gathering concerns, considerations, needs, and opportunities from project feedback groups, advisory committees, and interested / impacted groups and communities, maintaining a strong feedback loop and reporting processes Collaborating with advisory groups and panels, interested and impacted groups and communities, to nudge behavioral change and introduce new processes, services and experiences Leading all aspects of community and interested/impacted group outreach, engagement, and evaluation, including the development of in-person and virtual materials to support external engagements and events. Working closely with the indigenous relations team on topics of mutual interest Maintaining strong relationships BC Ferries leaders, staff and supporting the public affairs and marketing team with shared goals, as required

What you bring to the team




Bachelor's Degree in Professional Communications, Public Affairs, Public Engagement or related field Professional designation with International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) or other similar designations 10+ years of experience leading large-scale public participation and external engagements in-person and virtually 1-3 years of experience in working with local, provincial and/or federal governments 4-6 years of supervisory experience, including mentorship, performance management and People administration Extensive experience in strategic communications and community engagement with strong understanding of media relations, social media, and marketing principles Understanding of engagement practices including but not limited to trauma-informed inquiry, decolonizing practices, and social and accessible equity based inquiry

Additional information


The target salary range: $159,800 - $199,700 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate's knowledge, experience and internal equity.
