Job Description

Equal Opportunities West is seeking a caring and committed Direct Support Professional (DSP) to join our team. As a DSP, you will support individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities in ways that promote independence, dignity, inclusion, and meaningful participation in their communities. You will follow person-centered support plans, uphold the values of respect and self-determination, and ensure daily needs are met in a compassionate, professional manner.

Key Responsibilities:



Promote and respect personal choice, inclusion, and independence. Provide personal care assistance (e.g., hygiene, toileting, feeding, dressing, incontinence). Assist with physical support such as transfers, wheelchairs, walkers, and mobility equipment. Encourage community engagement, employment opportunities, and participation in activities. De-escalate challenging behaviors with professionalism and empathy using NVCI strategies. Uphold dignity by acting with compassion and reporting any suspected abuse or neglect. Maintain accurate records (attendance, logs, incident reports, progress notes). Collaborate with coworkers, families, and the individual's support team. Drive or accompany individuals to and from programs and events safely. Complete cleaning and maintenance tasks as needed to ensure a safe environment. Attend training, team meetings, and professional development opportunities.

Knowledge, Skills, & Experience:



Required:

Experience supporting individuals with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. Strong communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills. Comfort with physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs and pushing wheelchairs. Valid Manitoba Driver's License (Class 5); access to insured vehicle is an asset. Strong ethics, professionalism, and commitment to inclusion. Able to work both independently and as part of a team. Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel) for documentation and communication.
Preferred:

Knowledge of the Adults Living with an Intellectual Disability Act (ALIDA). American Sign Language (ASL) is an asset.

Certifications Required or Willing to Obtain:



First Aid & CPR Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Orientation to the Adults Living with Intellectual Disabilities Act Criminal Record Check (CRC), Adult Abuse Registry Check (AARC), and Child Abuse Registry Check (CARC), all dated within the last 3 months.

Working Conditions:



Work is conducted both indoors and in the community across various settings. Flexible to changes in schedules, duties, or support locations. May be required to use own vehicle (mileage reimbursed); transit costs may be covered. Physical activities may include walking, lifting, bending, and supporting mobility needs.
