The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is part of a team that ensures each person receiving services has the opportunity and support for independence, learning and self-expression according to their individual abilities and preferences. The employees help to create and maintain a comfortable home environment, provide assistance with activities of daily living and active participation of the person in the community.

Overview of position



The DSP is responsible to support adults with disabilities of all ages and others who need assistance to lead self-directed lives and contribute to their communities;

The DSP supports behaviours that enhance inclusion in their communities.

The DSP shall understand that people requiring support who have one disability, such as mental illness, can also have another disability, such as a substance abuse disorder, cognitive disability or a medical condition. These conditions are called co-occurring disorders.

The DSP is responsible to support adults with disabilities in their daily life routines. This will include providing hygiene and personal care support with toileting, showering, dressing, grooming etc.

The DSP will be responsible for cooking, serving and clean up of meals

The DSP will be responsible for ensuring that supported people's homes are clean and have a pleasant and homey atmosphere

The DSP will support persons in services in taking care of their pets

The DSP shall promote the agency's welcoming and effective provision of supports to such people.

The DSP is responsible for: teaching daily living, communication and work skills, administering medications and first aid, providing safe transportation, assisting with or coordinating medical and other support service appointments, maintaining accurate and detailed documentation and records, safeguarding the monetary and personal resources of people supported, implementing the philosophy, policies and procedures of the agency.

Requirements, Skills and Abilities:



Developmental Services Worker Diploma/Social Services Worker Diploma or degree in a relevant area of study

Valid Ontario Driver's License and willingness to drive agency van

Valid First Aid and C.P.R. Certificate

Pharmacology Training

Valid CPI or Safe Management Certificate is an asset

Demonstrated organizational ability

Demonstrated understanding of nutrition

Demonstrated knowledge in writing and implementation of client skill acquisition programs

Must be computer literate including working knowledge of Word processing and Internet

Competency in written and verbal communication

Ability in conflict resolution and personnel interaction

Ability to work independently but within a team environment

Current Criminal Reference Check (no older than 8 months)

Current Medical Note certifying freedom from communicable diseases, Hep B, TB and physically and mentally able to undertake duties of Personal Support Professional
