This position is situated within the division of Human Nutrition and the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science (AFNS), in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences (ALES). The Faculty of ALES is a leader in addressing global challenges through innovative solutions in agriculture, nutrition, the environment, and human ecology. The Department of AFNS achieves excellence in the discovery and dissemination of knowledge with the goal of improving the health and quality of life. Disciplines range from primary production and biotechnology in plant and animal sciences, via innovative food and agri-food products, to human nutrition and wellness. The department boasts 65 professors, 40 adjunct professors, over 230 graduate students, and more than 300 research and support staff. AFNS includes 4 divisions: Animal Science, Plant Biosystems, Food Science and Bioresource Technology, and Human Nutrition.

Position Summary




Reporting to the Director, Integrated Dietetic Internship, the Dietetic Internship Coordinator plays a key role in the coordination of professional practice practicum learning for students enrolled in the BSc. Nutrition and Food Science, Dietetics Specialization Program. The Dietetic Internship Coordinator provides support, coaching, and mentoring to students enrolled in the Dietetics Specialization, practicum program planning and scheduling, and education and training to both students and preceptors to facilitate practicum learning. As part of regular duties, this position maintains strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders involved in dietetic professional practice learning. This position is also responsible for supporting the administration and marketing of the Alberta Internationally Educated Dietitians Bridging Program.

Duties



1. Practicum Planning and Coordination (30%)



Identify and coordinate appropriate professional practice placements that meet competency requirements for future Registered Dietitians. Build and maintain relationships with placement sites and preceptors across healthcare, community, and private settings. Develop individualized practicum plans and schedules, considering student needs (e.g., disability accommodations, religious practices, and career goals). Collaborate with the Integrated Dietetic Internship team and external partners to secure placements.

2. Student Support and Performance Monitoring (50%)



Orient students to the expectations of competency-based learning and entry-to-practice standards. Monitor student progress through mid-point and final evaluations; provide feedback, mentorship, and academic guidance. Offer ongoing support throughout practicum placements, identifying at-risk students and helping implement support strategies. Coach students and preceptors on maximizing learning outcomes, addressing challenges, and navigating conflicts. Contribute to final grading decisions for professional practice courses. Educate preceptors on evaluation tools, policies, and processes for managing placement concerns.

3. Program Support and Special Projects (20%)



Serve as a preceptor for students placed in independent community sites lacking on-site Registered Dietitians. Support admissions processes, including participation in the Multiple Mini Interview process. Assist with assessment and support of internationally educated dietitians through Substantial Equivalency Testing. Provide career guidance to students preparing for entry into the profession. Contribute to program accreditation, evaluation, and continuous improvement efforts.

Qualifications



Education and

Professional Credentials



Bachelor's degree in Foods and Nutrition or Dietetics. Completion of an accredited dietetic internship. Active or eligible for registration with the College of Dietitians of Alberta (CDA).

Experience



Minimum of 5 years of professional dietetic practice. Experience supervising or mentoring dietetic interns in practicum settings is an asset. Experience teaching in post-secondary settings (in-person or online) is an asset.

Knowledge and Skills



Strong understanding of Canadian entry-to-practice competencies and competency-based learning models. Working knowledge of dietetic education, curriculum planning, and evaluation methods. Excellent interpersonal, counseling, and coaching skills to support both students and preceptors. Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive issues, resolve conflicts, and support student success. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal. Strong organizational and time management abilities; able to manage multiple priorities under pressure. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience with HSPnet or ConnectCare is an asset.
