This position is responsible for the repair and maintenance of the company's fleet of vehicles (primarily diesel engine buses) and equipment, using hand tools, precision measuring instruments and power tools. Diagnose engine and powertrain issues, disassemble/repair engines and examine parts for defects and excessive wear. Understand and identify parts required for repair and/or replacement, to maintain efficient operating condition.
Duties and responsibilities
Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs to vehicles in order to ensure the equipment is available, reliable and safe to operate
Perform diagnosis of engine, break, electrical components on vehicles using various diagnostic tools
Installation of new and added on equipment
Recondition and replace parts, such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves and bushings, using engine lathes, boring machines, hand tools and precision measuring tools
Review and complete repairs identified in Inspection Reports
Keep detailed and accurate maintenance reports and documentation
Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology and repair techniques
Assist in preparing preventative and predictive maintenance schedules
May weld and cut parts using arc-welding and flame cutting equipment
Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, procedures and government regulations
Perform in a team environment with minimal supervision
Performing other duties as required
Qualifications
Completion of one of the following Ontario College of Trades Programs:
o Truck and Coach Technician (310T) or Provincial/Territorial equivalent with Red Seal Endorsement (RSE)
o Automotive Service Technician Program (310S) or Provincial/Territorial equivalent with Red Seal Endorsement (RSE)
Possess and maintain a valid Driver's License
3-5 years of experience in a Mechanic role required; background in transportation industry preferred
Ability to work on different manufactured engines (mainly Cummins and Detroit)
Communication skills both verbally and in writing
Basic Computer knowledge in MS Office and maintenance software programs
A thorough understanding of relevant government and transportation legislation, policies and procedures
Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
Attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
Strong knowledge of and dedication to safety regulations and best practices
Working conditions
Fast-paced environment; travel to off-site locations may be required; ability to attend meetings; insert hand(s) into confined areas to repair vehicles and equipment; work under vehicles and equipment while they are on a hoist or the shop floor; overtime/shift work/on-call hours may be required; work both indoors and outdoors; hazards associated with the trade
Physical requirements
Walking and standing on concrete or asphalt; bend, stoop, crouch, kneel and crawl to repair vehicles and equipment; reach below, at and above shoulder height to repair vehicles and equipment from awkward positions; hand, power and air tool use is required; climb, stand and balance on ladders or the vehicles and equipment to perform repair; ability to lift 50lbs
