We're seeking a skilled DevOps Engineer to join our team and help manage our infrastructure across both cloud and on-premise environments. This role combines system administration, infrastructure management, cybersecurity, and monitoring, with opportunities for software development.
Our infrastructure spans bare metal servers running Debian and Proxmox in the cloud, as well as on-premise Debian systems deployed on Canadian and ocean-going vessels that capture and transmit IoT telemetry data to shore. You'll play a critical role in ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of these systems.
About Us
At Beaverlabs, we build easy-to-use, reliable software products for ship owners and ship operators.
Modern vessels are equipped with a myriad of sensors tracking every aspect of their operation. Unfortunately, this data is often coming from disparate systems that were not designed to function together, leading to difficulties when it comes to gathering the data and making it useful.
Our products help our customers bring this data to shore and bring it to life, enabling them to derive actionable insights that lead to reduction in fuel consumption, maintenance cost and emissions.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and maintain Debian-based servers and Proxmox virtualization infrastructure on bare metal
Administer on-premise systems deployed on vessels for IoT data collection and transmission
Implement and maintain comprehensive server and application monitoring solutions
Lead cybersecurity initiatives for both cloud and on-premise environments
Perform system administration tasks including deployment, configuration, and optimization
Monitor system performance and troubleshoot issues across our infrastructure
Contribute to software development projects as needed (Elixir experience is a plus)
Document systems, processes, and security protocols
Required Qualifications
Strong hands-on experience with Debian Linux administration
Experience with Proxmox and LXC
Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms
Experience with Ansible
Solid understanding of cybersecurity principles and best practices
Experience with system and application monitoring tools
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
Excellent communication skills for documenting and explaining technical concepts
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
Experience with Elastic Stack (Elasticsearch, Kibana) for security monitoring and log analysis
Software development experience, particularly with Elixir
Familiarity with infrastructure as code tools (OpenTofu or similar)
Location Requirement
This position is currently 100% remote, but candidates must be physically located in Calgary, Alberta. We plan to open a Calgary office in the future, at which point this role will transition to a hybrid work arrangement.
