Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.


The Manager of the Bayview program is currently seeking dedicated Part-Time Developmental Support Workers. The Developmental Support Workers will provide coordinated, safe care and support to intellectually disabled persons with mental health needs i.e. dually diagnosed, as a member of the collaborative care team through person-centered planning, and by promoting the development of natural supports and opportunities for inclusion; enabling clients to live, work, play and participate in all aspects of life to their potential.


Please Note: This position offers a hybrid work environment consisting of in-office and remote work. Office location is 500 Church Street, Penetanguishene, ON.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:



Participating with the collaborative care team in developing, coordinating, implementing and evaluating, individualized client care plans and treatment strategies, to meet client goals through the developmental bio-psychosocial model of care; Participating in discussions/plan of care meetings/conferences concerning the client's status/progress/care/treatment; exchanging information, documenting according to Waypoint standards on a variety of electronic platforms e.g. client clinical record, Spirit incident reporting system. Participating in the implementation of positive behavioural support plans. Providing direct client care under the supervision and direction of nursing staff, e.g. observation of medically stable clients on 1:1, care of clients in restraints when the outcomes are predictable, escorting clients within the campus/on grounds and into the community; taking vital signs of the medically stable client, i.e., Blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature (tympanic); performing behavioural observations and assessments. Performing and documenting observations and assessments of client changes in health and behavioral status, side effects of medications and the potential need of medications, and reporting concerns to nursing staff and/or the clinical team. Facilitating and promoting the development of skills of everyday life and acceptable social behaviour by developing and implementing a personalized teaching plan to support individuals, creating and leading opportunities for inclusion and participation in therapeutic and leisure programs, community activities through instructing, supportive counselling and assisting clients in personal care, hygiene, life and social skills. Providing a safe, therapeutic environment for clients and co-workers, including the provision of crisis prevention intervention (CPI); applying mechanical restraints and protective devices under supervision of the Registered Nurse. Collaborating with community support/agency staff to assist clients in the development of person entered plans to assist the client in identifying and realizing their goals and dreams to support recovery. Participating in a controlled multi-sensory stimulation on a 1:1 or group basis adapting the lighting, atmosphere, sounds, and textures to the specific needs of the clients as determined by the Occupational Therapist, documenting and reporting events. Supporting client transitional discharge and community reintegration by assessing discharge readiness and developing, implementing, evaluating and modifying interventions in collaboration with the client, collaborative care team, family/community partners.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:



Developmental Support Worker Diploma from accredited teaching facility (2 year program), required. Experience working with individuals with dual dianogsis in a hospital setting preferred Professional communication reflective of the values, ethics and principles espoused by this hospital. Knowledge of behavior theory and management in the area of developmental services in order to understand and care for intellectually disabled clients with mental health needs to implement behavior modification programs. Knowledge of therapeutic communication strategies to engage with clients in a goal-oriented manner. Knowledge of teaching applications and methodology related to intellectually disabled clients in order to teach life skills such as personal care, life and social skills. Knowledge of basic client care procedures, knowledge of hospital policies and procedures to ensure appropriate care to clients, e.g., crisis intervention techniques, mechanical restraint. Results oriented work ethic to work independently and undertake tasks needed to accomplish work objectives and deliver quality, consistent and timely results Demonstrated leadership, conflict resolution, interpersonal and organizational skills Proven written and verbal communication skills Proven ability to adapt readily to change and reflects an optimistic and positive attitude Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values (Caring, Respect, Accountability, Innovation) Preference for proficiency in French/English language skills.
