The Advancement office / Okanagan College Foundation is responsible for fundraising at Okanagan College. We inspire giving to transform lives and communities. We engage community to invest in Okanagan College\xe2\x80\x99s campuses, capital projects, learning spaces, equipment, and programs and we create opportunities for donors to help students fulfill their potential through education.
Under the general direction of the Director, Advancement, the Development Officer plays a key, strategic role in developing, promoting, implementing and growing the major gifts program, with initial major focus on the Food, Wine & Tourism project, in order to advance the mission and priorities of Okanagan College and its students.

The Development Officer is assigned lead responsibility for developing and leading specifc campaigns working collaboratively with the Advancement team to successfully implement and achieve defined goals.

The Development Officer works to promote loyal giving and to upgrade donor giving; this includes identifying, cultivating, soliciting, securing, recognizing and stewarding a portfolio of major gift prospects for all regions of Okanagan College.

Interaction is primarily with donors, prospective donors, volunteers with campaign committees, Directors of the Okanagan College Foundation, employees of Okanagan College and external professionals; and may also be with members of the Alumni Association, corporations, groups, foundations and students.

The Development Officer provides advice on fundraising methods and campaigns and implements plans to secure Okanagan College fundraising targets.


Functions and Duties


1. Develops comprehensive campaign strategies related to the College\xe2\x80\x99s priority projects, with initial primary focus being the Food, Wine & Tourism project, with an anticipated goal exceeding $4 million.

2. Develops comprehensive strategies for soliciting and securing major gifts from individuals, groups, foundations and corporations and other donors to support Advancement and campaign goals.

3. Works collaboratively with College portfolio Deans, Regional Deans and Department Chairs in the development and implementation of campaigns.

4. Actively identifies, cultivates, and solicits major gifts with prospects, donors, and negotiates the terms of gifts with donors.

5. Writes correspondence, case statements and gift proposals to assigned prospects, including drafting award agreements, deeds of gift and pledge agreements.

6. Recognizes and stewards existing donors to acknowledge support and maintain the donor relationship.

7. Manages a portfolio of 100-150 qualified major gift prospects, and visits an average of 200 prospects and donors per year.

8. Cultivates and manages relationships with prospects and donors, through one-on-one introductions and participation in social events.

9. Attends meetings and special events, including participating in planning and hosting of fundraising and donor recognition events.

10. Coordinates and produces financial, budget and other special reports, proposals, and analyses for the Director of Advancement, including monthly activity reports.

11. Remains familiar with key industry trends, and maintains knowledge of emerging strategies through a commitment to professional development and continuous learning.

12. Creates contact reports in RE NXT (Raiser\xe2\x80\x99s Edge), provides information to the database records and files, including those used to track donor and gift information to ensure compliance with prospect management procedures.

13. Monitors gifts received by the College and Foundation.

14. Liaises with the Okanagan College Foundation on gift acceptance for donations, award agreements and endowments.

15. Provides regular status reports to the Director of Advancement and the Foundation\xe2\x80\x99s Board of Directors on matters of interest related to major gifts.

16. Contributes to policy development, including gift acceptance, donor recognition and sponsorship.

17. Works collaboratively with and contributes as a team member in the Department of Advancement.

18. Helps promote a culture of philanthropy within Okanagan College; engages faculty, deans, directors, chairs and staff in cultivation and solicitation efforts.

19. Helps identify, coach and mentor campaign volunteers and helps assign prospects to volunteers.

20. Performs other duties as assigned.




Education and Experience

Completion of a minimum of a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree from a recognized post-secondary instutition, preferably in Philanthropy, Non-Profit Management, Communications or Marketing or other related program, or technical training equivalent to three years of study in a related field is required. CFRE certification along with membership in the AFP, CCAE or CAGP is preferable. A minimum five years fundraising experience with extensive knowledge and a proven track record of individual, corporate or Foundation fundraising is required, preferably in the post-secondary sector. Experience working with volunteers is an asset.

Travel may be required. Hours and days of work may vary with work on weekends and/or evenings required.

  • Demonstrated ability to solicit and close major gifts
  • High motivation to meet goals and targets coupled with tact and diplomacy, and consistent follow through
  • Proven skills in negotiation and diplomacy
  • Ability to manage relationships and build long-term relationships with donors
  • Ability to exercise a high-level of tact and discretion in both internal and external interactions
  • Ability to work under pressure, juggle multiple deadlines and interact with a diverse client base including other members of the department and the internal community of Okanagan College
  • Competency with word-processing and spreadsheet applications; knowledge and prior use of the RE NXT (Raiser\xe2\x80\x99s Edge) database
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills are required, particularly in the area of writing proposals
  • Experience working with volunteers and demonstrated commitment to long-term relationship building with donors is necessary
  • Detail oriented, focused and strategic thinker, with initiative, passion and energy

Annual Salary/Hourly Rate
Range $72,514 to $96,685. Typical Hiring Range $87,017 to $96,685.
