As Development Assistant, Events at the BC SPCA you\'ll be joining one of the most innovative and successful fundraising teams in Canada. The BC SPCA is funded by compassionate animal lovers who helped us assist more than 118,000 animals last year. Your work will help make all of this possible. As Development Assistant, Events you will focus primarily on supporting the planning and execution of our signature fundraising events across the province.

The role of Development Assistant, Events

  • As part of the Community Giving & Engagement team, reporting to the Senior Officer, Events you\'ll be part of the strategy development and execution of our events portfolio.
  • You\'re responsible for supporting fundraising events, primarily by assisting the leads of Fur Ball and Offleashed events by:
  • Coordinating production of digital and print materials, including updating design files and some basic asset creation.
  • Drafting and sourcing content for communications (stories, photos, and videos).
  • Preparing and sending event eblasts and updating event websites.
  • Contributing to stage programing plans, including event video content and coordinating video production (talent, location, videographer, etc).
  • Building and managing each event\'s online ticket and auction system.
  • Maintaining event guest lists and seating arrangements.
  • Tracking expenses and revenue.
  • Coordinating volunteers by building schedules, drafting communication, identifying and defining roles, and facilitating event orientation.
  • Supporting set up, delivery, and tear down of events.
  • You are also responsible for supporting the Senior Officer, Events to develop the event plan and lead on plan execution for Vancouver Lock-In for Love, including:
  • Procurement of supplies such as decorations, food, event tables, and banners.
  • Coordinating with Animal Centre staff on logistics.
  • Providing event day support to the individual fundraisers (approx. 10 people);
  • Coordinating offline donations gift processing with Generosity Services.
  • You\'ll be collaborating with the digital giving, philanthropy and other teams on event guest lists and other event assets like websites and stage programming.
  • You\'d be working directly with event vendors to receive quotes, place orders for supplies etc., and communicating with donors, attendees, sponsors and volunteers on some event details.
  • You are expected to utilize appropriate measures and metrics to evaluate the success of your program areas and provide regular reporting as required.
  • You are supported and encouraged to develop and maintain relationships with industry peers and maintain a commitment to continued education, learning and innovation.
While every day is different, a day in this role might include:
  • Writing a first draft of an eblast for one of our signature events.
  • Procuring supplies needed for an event and coordinating delivery to the event location.
  • Researching vendors and requesting and reviewing quotes.
  • Sending personalized confirmation emails to ticket buyers.
  • Meeting with the Senior Officer, Events to review your research on event sponsorship prospects.
  • Facilitating a meeting with the event team to review the event\'s critical path.
  • Editing and updating an event webpage with edits from the event team.
  • Building an eblast in our software program (Luminate Online) and creating the distribution list.

What skills have you developed?
  • University degree in relevant discipline plus some experience in fundraising with specialization in events; or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer.
  • You can demonstrate an understanding of big picture fundraising and how signature events fit in.
  • You have some knowledge and experience of event best practices, trends and opportunities.
  • You are a clear and persuasive communicator, both written and oral, including an ability to relate respectfully to a diverse audience.
  • You know when something is your responsibility and when you have to escalate something. If you don\'t know, you\'ll ask for help.
  • When you see a problem or an opportunity to make something better you bring forward solutions.
  • You\'re great at information gathering: determining what you\'ll need, sourcing it, analyzing, distilling and reporting back.
  • You are comfortable using data: establishing data points, accurate record keeping, collecting data, using data to support initiatives, and to demonstrate success, need or areas of concern.
  • CRM experience preferred (and an openness to learning; we use Raiser\'s Edge and Luminate Online);
  • You have experience using a graphic design program and are open to learning others (we use Adobe and Canva).
  • You are proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and have a good sense of the tricks and processes for mail merge, formulas, styles templates, etc. (and are eager to learn when you don\'t!)
  • You are able to thrive in an open concept and fast-paced work environment

The BC SPCA compensation structure is based on external benchmarks and regularly reviewed. Starting placement on the range for this position will be commensurate with the successful candidate\'s experience. The hiring manager will share the range with short-listed candidates prior to scheduling interviews.
