Job Description

The Detroit River Canadian Cleanup (DRCC) implements the Remedial Action Plan on behalf of a community-based partnership between the government (federal, provincial, municipal), local industries, researchers, environmental organizations, and citizens working together to protect, restore, and enhance the Detroit River ecosystem, with the ultimate goal of delisting the Canadian side of the Detroit River as an Area of Concern.

The

Detroit River Canadian Cleanup (DRCC) Remedial Action Plan Coordinator (SGE, Contract)

supports the DRCC program as the project manager, technical writer, communications lead and is the primary point of contact for the Detroit River Canadian Remedial Action Plan (RAP). The position reports to a Supervisory Group that includes the Essex Region Conservation Authority's Director, Conservation Services along with provincial and federal representatives.

This position is classified as a 'Special Grant Employee' as the tasks associated with this position are funded in whole or in part through Federal and Provincial agency funding sources.

Note: Grant funding is confirmed through March 31, 2026, and future Provincial and Federal funding is approved on a biennial basis expected through March 31, 2028.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



Recommends, coordinates and implements the remaining actions necessary to delist the Canadian side of the Detroit River as an Area of Concern. Works with Conservation Authority staff to implement and monitor restoration projects including future large-scale projects that will create emergent vegetation and wetland areas, for habitat and ecosystem benefits. Prepares scientific reports and coordinates and contributes to other technical documents, as required Serves as the program's project manager, including grant writing/reporting and reporting on budget-to-actual expenditures, variance analysis and financial projections, as required by the funders and respective transfer payment agreements. Creates, manages and maintains all records relating to the program, including database maintenance. Recommends upgrades and enhancements to information systems specific to the DRCC and the RAP. Provides secretariat services and meeting support for the program and the various Committees/Work Groups/Public Advisory Council. Develops and implements work plans and other related technical documents to address and respond to priority RAP actions. Prepares and communicates complex technical information to a variety of stakeholders. Coordinates public outreach and engages the community in the remediation of the Detroit River Area of Concern through events and special outreach projects. Directs any support staff who may be assigned to the project on a part-time or as needed basis. Performs other related duties and responsibilities consistent with the position, as required.

MINIMUM SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:



Post-graduate university education (Master's level degree) in Environmental Science, Biology, Natural Resources Management, Ecology or related applicable field, or a combination of education and experience deemed acceptable by the employer. Experience coordinating multi-disciplinary, multi-agency/partnered projects and initiatives. Exceptional report writing and verbal communications skills, both technical/scientific and plain language with the ability to adapt communications to a variety of audiences and stakeholders. Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work with a range of stakeholder groups, independently, and as a member of a team, with internal and external partners Proficient with various software applications (SharePoint, MS- Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams), Zoom and other web-conferencing software, web and database maintenance, as well as various social media platforms. Financial acumen and experience with transfer payment agreements, budgeting and financial reporting. The job may include some travel (U.S. and Canada) and will involve occasional evening and/or weekend work. Must possess an MTO Class "G" Driver's licence in good standing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:



Work schedule is typically Monday-Friday from 8:30 - 4pm, with occasional evening and weekend work assignments. This position may be subject to temporary layoffs from time to time and/or alternate work schedules should business interruptions occur, or project funding or scope be reduced or terminated.

Hazards and Risks

: normal office environment, with occasional fieldwork involving exposure to moderately uncomfortable factors including, working in hot and cold temperatures, dirt and dust, working around noxious weeds, stinging insects. Outdoor work may require prolonged standing/walking, negotiation of obstacles, and bending or stooping, and working in/near water.

Environmental conditions:

Work is primarily performed within a standard office environment and regularly requires periods of visual and mental concentration of 2 to 4 hours duration, prolonged sitting (and associated physical strain), and accuracy and attention to detail. Occasional travel will be required to meet with stakeholders and public outreach events.
