Duties

A Detachment Support Assistant provides administrative and operational support services for police officers and other employees at a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment. This position also provides front counter and telephone assistance, services and information to the general public.

Work environment

The Yellowknife RCMP Detachment is looking for motivated and industrious individuals to be a part of a team of support personnel who directly impact the public and regular members who work in frontline policing.

You will become part of a dynamic group of Public Servants who are responsible for work in areas such as police records, customer service, procurement, finance and a host of other support tasks at an RCMP detachment.

Detachment Service Assistants positions require the ability to think things through to problem solve, anticipate needs, stay current with applicable policies and procedures as well as be adaptable in an ever-changing work environment. There are many distractions within an RCMP Detachment and candidates must be versatile and able to manage multiple tasks at once, with the understanding that constant interruptions throughout the day will be unavoidable.

Candidates must also have sound organizational skills, be a self-starter, possess a calm demeanor under pressure and have the ability to work well with others.

The intent of this process is to staff three (3) permanent positions in Yellowknife, NT.

A qualified pool of candidates may be established and may be used to staff future vacancies on a permanent and/or temporary basis.

EDUCATION:
  • Successful completion of two years of secondary school, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.*

  • Candidates invited to an interview will be required to bring proof of their education credentials, in the form of a diploma or official transcript
Degree equivalency
EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience using word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Experience preparing documents such as letters, memoranda, briefing notes or reports.
  • Experience providing service to internal or external clients / general public, via telephone or in person.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience in providing records management services such as indexing, cross-referencing, filing, retrieving, retaining, archiving or destroying data.
  • Experience in providing administrative support services to senior management.
  • Experience working in a law enforcement and/or legal environment.
  • Experience transcribing from audio cassettes or digital media.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Willing and able to work in or relocate to Yellowknife
  • Willing and able to work in a busy police environment, including exposure to unsettling and/or graphic material.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime, as required.
  • Maintain a valid driver\'s license, or have personal mobility to the degree normally associated with a driver\'s license.
  • Willingness and ability to occasionally travel for work or training purposes using various modes of transportation including small aircraft.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - RCMP Enhanced Reliability Status (ERS) security clearance.

Those selected must meet and maintain the above condition of employment throughout their employment. The successful applicant will have to obtain, as a minimum, an RCMP Reliability Status. The process requires a Security/Reliability Interview, a field investigation in matters of credit/finances, education, employment, references, etc.

Health Canada approved medical clearance (Isolated Post only).
