The Individual Learning Modules (ILM) Office is responsible for the creation, maintenance, and publishing of all Individual Learning Modules (ILMs). ILMs are standardized learning resources for instructors and students in apprenticeship, trades, and technical training courses. Based on the Alberta skilled trades curriculum guides, ILM publications are an important part of the apprenticeship curriculum and provide learners with current, learning materials that meet or exceed industry standards. The ILM office, both a learning resource development and publishing team, manages ILM content development, product creation, publishing, and distribution.
Desktop Publishing Specialists (Product Specialists) closely support and collaborate with learning designers, illustrators, and editors to iteratively build educational content for print. They play a pivotal role in the curriculum development and publishing process, contributing to the workflow, quality, consistency, and visual appeal of Individual Learning Modules. They ensure the final product is engaging and effectively communicates complex concepts to learners.
Working within the curriculum development and publishing team, the specialist ensures that the publications are cohesive and well-structured materials that meet the highest quality standards.
The Desktop Publishing specialist reports to the Product Lead within the ILM office and is primarily responsible for coordinating creation, maintenance, and administration of ILM products, product lines, assets, and document control.
Key Responsibilities: Technical Product Responsibilities

  • Layout and Design: Collaborate with authors, learning designers, editors and illustrators to format, layout, and publish educational materials, including print modules, E-pub and other digital resources, PowerPoint Presentations, Communications documents and publishing release notes while adhering to brand guidelines. Ensure a consistent visual identity throughout all materials.
  • Typography and Formatting: Detailed formatting of various types of documents, primarily MS Word. Applying appropriate styles, fonts, font sizes, line spacing, and other typographic elements to enhance readability and aesthetics. Apply consistent formatting to headers, subheadings, body text, and other content components.
  • Graphic Design: Comfortable and skilled at completing basic graphic edits to labels, arrows, line art or other simple illustrations using Adobe illustrator and producing a working .ai file and final tiff file according to print specifications.
  • Graphics Integration: Integrate and insert graphics, images, charts, diagrams, and illustrations into the materials to enhance understanding and engagement. Optimize visuals for both print and digital formats.
  • Iterative Product Updates: Completion of various product updating and management tasks such as image/asset insertion, product quality review and assessments, and product resource provision (assets from stock sources, DAM/product library).
  • Page Composition: Arrange text and visuals harmoniously on each page, paying attention to margins, alignment, spacing, and page breaks. Ensure that content flows logically and aesthetically.
  • Template Development: Create and maintain development and process templates, ensuring efficiency and consistency in design across different projects.
  • Quality Control: Conduct thorough proofreading and quality checks to identify and rectify errors in layout, formatting, and content integration. Ensure accuracy and adherence to design guidelines and the ILM style guide.
  • Print Preparation: Prepare final products for print, ensuring that files are correctly formatted for printing, including bleeds, color profiles, page counts and other technical specifications.
  • Digital Publishing: Adapt designs for digital platforms, optimizing layouts for e-books, interactive PDFs, and online learning management systems (LMS).
  • Software Expertise: Utilize desktop publishing software (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and other relevant tools to create and edit layouts and designs.
  • Stay Current: Keep abreast of industry trends, design best practices, and emerging technologies to continually enhance the quality and effectiveness of educational materials.
Workflow and Communication Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including curriculum developers, editors, illustrators, and printers, to ensure effective communication and a streamlined publishing process.
  • Proficiency in desktop publishing software, particularly MS Office suite, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Use a SharePoint and Monday.com based workflow system for all stages of job completion.
  • Reviewing your own work to ensure all formatting, processes, and instructions are completed correctly.
  • Producing high volume, accurate, and on-time work.
  • Regularly participating in production team discussions and meetings.
Asset Management Responsibilities
  • Management of ILM image/graphic assets.
  • Management of Master ILM product lines
  • Edition and Version control and tracking, file naming conventions and file system architecture and organization.
  • Maintain integrity of asset management system by ensuring assets are secure and organized.
Skills & Abilities:
  • Graphic design and illustration of basic line art, arrows, labels, diagrams, and data.
  • Strong understanding of typography, layout design principles, and visual hierarchy.
  • Attention to detail and a keen eye for visual consistency and accuracy.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, with the ability to transform complex, technical content into engaging visuals.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities to collaborate effectively within a diverse team.
  • digital asset management control processes and maintains these systems to manage ILM products, assets and related information such as metadata, file naming conventions, digital asset tagging, and rules for digital asset storage/archiving.

Qualifications:
  • Completion of Grade twelve and related post-secondary diploma or degree.
  • Considerable experience in the field of multimedia.
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field is preferred.
  • Diploma, certificate, or specialized training in Microsoft Office 365 applications, Asset Management and/or Product Development is an asset.
  • Experience (2+ years) in product development, educational publishing and/or curriculum or development is an asset.
  • 2+ years' experience working with digital publishing platforms and eReaders is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge and experience using Monday.com software or similar Project Management software.
  • Equivalent experience might be considered in lieu of certifications.

Remuneration: $2,250.85 - $2,989.31 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Multimedia Specialist I).
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
