Hatch, a full-service consultancy, is currently seeking a highly motivated Design Manager - Stations and Transit Facilities to join our Linear Infrastructure & Facilities team in the Calgary, AB location.

The Design Manager will lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers and architects to ensure the delivery of a high-quality design for our clients while adhering to technical requirements, schedule and commercial objectives. Our projects involve at-grade, elevated and underground stations, rail maintenance facilities, bus depots, intermodal transfer centres, operations and control buildings and related infrastructure such as utility buildings and traction power substations.

The core responsibilities of the role include design oversight, design coordination, and interdisciplinary management. This role requires technical experience working on complex transit projects as well as high emotional quotient, objective thinking, problem solving skills and empathetic leadership characteristics. The most suitable candidate will have a background in facilities and be comfortable with and demonstrate experience in multidisciplinary design coordination. With exponential growth in the Transit Business Unit within Hatch and many projects locally and internationally, this is an exciting opportunity for an applicant to demonstrate their leadership potential.

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Managing, coordinating and interfacing with project team members including clients, designers, technical specialists, subconsultants and other project stakeholders.
  • Active participation in internal project team meetings to understand project requirements, schedule, deliverables, technical issues, etc.
  • Assist with documenting change management, decision logs and risk identification.
  • Provide input and help with the preparation of design, cost and schedule progress reporting.
  • Ensure that design deliverables meet client requirements and Hatch\'s QA/QC.
  • Maintain technical prominence within the industry as it relates to transit facilities.
  • Other general duties as required for successful and timely project execution.
  • Contribute towards growing Hatch\'s portfolio of projects with regards to transit facilities.
  • Developing staff through mentoring and establishing career development plans.
  • Maintaining a strong network within Hatch (globally) as well as within the transit industry.
You bring to the role:
  • The preferred candidate will have a Technical Diploma or Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Architecture.
  • Must have a minimum of 7 years\' experience in a multidisciplinary environment with Transit Facilities (equivalent engineering experience with similar buildings or facilities will be considered).
  • Good knowledge of engineering/architectural design tasks required for transit facilities as well as an understanding of guideway design, track design, tunnel ventilation, systems design, and design integration.
  • Familiarity with all different project delivery phases from inception to construction and an understanding of different project delivery models including design-bid-build, design-build, design-build-operate and maintain.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and interpersonal soft skills.
  • Must have good analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Have the ability to make principled and balanced technical vs commercial decisions.
  • Must demonstrate the agility to quickly shift focus when different priorities arise.
  • Must have good record keeping skills.
