Engineering Technical Services (ETS) is a dynamic team dedicated to advancing research and education within the Faculty of Engineering. We collaborate with faculty and students to design, manufacture, and support innovative experimental devices and laboratory equipment.
Our multidisciplinary team brings together a wealth of expertise from Machinists, Electrical Technicians, Material Testing Specialists, Engineers, Millwrights, Carpenters, and Plastics Specialists.
Reporting to the Technical Services Supervisor, the Design Engineer is responsible for working with Researchers and students to assist in developing designs and drawing packages for manufacture in support of research and teaching activities in the Faculty of Engineering. The successful candidate should hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related field and should have a breadth of experience in drafting, design, and manufacturing.
The Design Engineer will be primarily responsible for research support activities and will be working on site in the Engineering Technical Services team.
Responsibilities:

  • Provide consultative services to students and researchers on methodologies around the creations of machined parts and assemblies including material types, manufacturing processes, and design process.
  • Review submitted design drawings for technical issues, such as manufacturability, tolerancing, assembly details and provide recommendations to clients to address issues.
  • Work with research groups and on technical support requests, review safety requirements for both in lab equipment modifications and for technical projects activities.
  • Create models, assemblies, and drawing packages to be utilized for manufacturing and machining activities.
  • Develop bill of materials and work instructions as appropriate to support efficient purchasing and manufacturing.
  • Communicate with and provide support to the machinist teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Provide as built documentation for manufactured parts and assemblies.
  • Set-up and operate material testing equipment.
  • Provide support to teaching staff (Graduate Student TA's) for material testing & undergraduate labs.
  • Review internal process flow for continuous improvement.
  • Prepare project budget estimates.
  • Review and approve completed project billing details.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • Hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Registration as an EIT in the province of Alberta (P. Eng is preferred).
  • 3+ years of relevant experience working in an engineering design capacity or materials testing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the design and fabrication process.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing techniques and machine tools.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and the ability to think creatively.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively in a team and with multiple stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • SolidWorks experience (modeling, simulation, sheet metal, assemblies).
  • Design of Pressure equipment.
  • Design of weldments and structural fabrication.
  • Knowledge of CNC machining.
  • Programming knowledge in Python and/or MATLAB.
