Campus Architecture leads the university community in design discussions aimed at the development of large and small-scale projects within the campus environment. Campus Architecture is a resource to the university community, creating a vision for inclusive, collaborative, and equitable spaces that promote excellence. Campus Architecture provides guidance on space planning and building code and identifies opportunities for improvements in the existing building inventory and the exterior environment. Campus Architecture maintains the University of Calgary Design Standards (in collaboration with stakeholders and subject matter experts), directs architectural consulting teams in the execution of projects on campus, and is responsible for both long-range development planning and landscape planning.


Campus Architecture works closely with a range of other portfolios, in particular Campus Planning (CP), Campus Engineering (CE), the Project Management Office (PMO), Real Estate, Leasing, and Land Holdings (RE), Information Technology (UCIT) and interacts regularly with Facilities Management (FM), the Office of Institutional Commitments (OIC), Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), Supply Chain Management (SCM) and the broader University community.


This position reports to the Senior Interior Designer and provides space planning, interior schematic design, project, and administration support to the facility development team. This position splits time between design coordination (approximately 70%) and design administration (approximately 30%).

Summary of Key Responsibilities

(job functions include but are not limited to):


Design Coordination

Maintain current knowledge of the NBC AB Edition, NFC AB edition, accessibility/universal design, and sustainable building practices. Learn and use space management and 3D sketching software as required hand sketching is an asset. Participate in programming and requirement-gathering with senior staff and stakeholders. Assist senior staff in preparation of interior design and layout plans for renovations, relocations, and space additions. Attend and document project meetings to develop and coordinate design solutions that meet user requirements. Produce preliminary space plans and sketches that reflect occupant needs and design standards. Ensure designs comply with University Design Standards, accessibility requirements, and applicable codes. Compile and document the selection and specification of furniture, fixtures, equipment, and millwork, including layout drawings and detailed product descriptions. Specify finishes and materials to meet functional, environmental, and safety requirements, in alignment with University Design Standards. Revise drawings to reflect design and technical changes; maintain updated record drawings. Coordinate with external consultants and design professionals. Assist with site verifications, field surveys, and punch walks. Manage and track shop drawings and submittals for review. Prepare change notices, change orders, and directives for review. Prepare payment certificates for review. Log and track RFIs, change requests, and shop drawings. Provide tracking and measuring services related to furniture, fixtures, and equipment. Become familiar with procurement rules and protocols. Maintain familiarity with the campus building inventory and record drawings. Become well-versed in the existing building inventory. Undertake special projects and other duties as assigned.

Design Administration

Manage project schedules, meetings, and calendars. Organize and maintain project documentation, files, and databases. Prepare and distribute correspondence, minutes, reports, and presentations. Support RFP preparation and procurement documentation. Prepare project, FF&E, and governance reports. Support the preparation of design presentations and proposals. Assist with client presentations and meetings. Support the selection of materials and furnishings. Manage the sample library and liaise with product representatives. Coordinate and schedule vendor demonstrations and educational sessions. Respond to user inquiries and day-to-day requests by phone and email. Maintain professional communication with stakeholders. Facilitate prompt communication between the design team and users.

Qualifications / Requirements:



Degree in Interior Design (CIDA-accredited), Architecture, or a technical diploma in architectural / engineering technology in combination with relevant experience. 3 -5 years of experience working in the design industry (or equivalent). Familiarity with LEED v. Strong understanding of architectural and interior design standards and practices. Demonstrated knowledge and application of accessible design standards. Ability to read and interpret construction documents. Proficiency in producing 2D construction drawings in AutoCAD and reviewing drawings for accuracy and design intent. Experience with contract administration (RFIs, shop drawings, change notices, certificates of payment). Ability to develop conceptual designs and visualizations to communicate design intent. Demonstrated technical competence and a record of delivering high-quality design work. Strong graphic design skills with the ability to hand sketch. Strong critical thinking and critical thinking skills: ability to synthesize information and propose innovative solutions. Highly organized, self-motivated, and proactive with strong attention to detail. Proven ability to manage a high volume of complex work and meet multiple project deadlines. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated initiative and creativity to drive improvements and foster positive outcomes. Collaborative team player with strong information-sharing habits. Ability to share information effectively and work collaboratively. Adaptable to change and able to constructively contribute to process improvements. Commitment to continuous professional learning. Ability to work effectively in team environments across departments to achieve optimal results.

Software proficiency (required/preferred):

AutoCAD - required. Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Teams, Planner, SharePoint) - required; Access and Power BI considered assets. SketchUp or Revit with Enscape for modelling and renderings - preferred. Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) - preferred.
