About the Opportunity

This position will have various start dates in spring and summer of 2024.

The Dalhousie Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine is seeking an innovative and committed Clinical Scientist/ Researcher to join our team of over 100 anesthesiologists in the greater Halifax area, working clinically within the Central Zone of Nova Scotia Health and academically with Dalhousie University\'s Faculty of Medicine. The successful candidate will be granted a faculty appointment at Dalhousie University upon hire.
Research Focus:
As a clinical and academic Department, we continually strive to strengthen our research focus in anesthesia, pain management and perioperative medicine and develop impactful research that improves patient care. The Department maintains a strong research profile across a wide range of health-related fields. Candidates should have a demonstrated record of, or potential for, high-quality research, commensurate with their career stage. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a strong externally funded research program. The candidate would also be active in developing collaborations. There are connections at Dalhousie University to several established research groups (e.g., Dalhousie Pain Network, Brain Repair Centre, Institute for Big Data Analytics) and Research Wave Groups in the Faculty of Medicine for those involved in translational research.
Paid protected time for research is available, up to 0.6 FTE, negotiable depending on research scope, interests and plan. Our researchers are also supported by an Office of Research with a robust infrastructure and funding opportunities that fosters the discovery of new knowledge through priority-driven research as well as grassroots systematic inquiry.
Clinical Focus:
In addition to supporting the academic research and teaching mandate, the candidate will work within the province\'s quaternary and tertiary care centres providing comprehensive anesthetic clinical care to patients. The positions will work within the clinical sites of the Central Zone of Nova Scotia Health, exact locations to be determined by the Head. Staff may be required to work at any site within the boundaries of the Central Zone, including QEII Health Sciences Centre, at both the Halifax Infirmary (HI) and the Victoria General (VG) sites; Dartmouth General Hospital; Hants Community Hospital and Scotia Surgery. There may be opportunities to provide clinical care in other sites (e.g., IWK Health Centre) under the direction of the Head.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the research activities of the Department as a clinician scientist, the details of which will be negotiated with the Department Head or designate on an annual basis.
  • Support NSH and Dalhousie\'s research policies and procedures and comply with all legal, ethical, accountability and financial management standards applicable to research activities.
  • Effectively and safely deliver the full scope of speciality anesthesia clinical care/services to patients, and fully and equitably participate in the relevant on-call schedule(s).
  • Participate in patient safety and quality improvement activities and rounds.
  • Participate in clinical teaching and instructing as required in undergraduate, postgraduate and fellowship programs to medical students, residents, fellows, allied health care providers, and other learners during their anesthesiology rotations in all areas where care is provided such as perioperative or pain clinics or within the operating rooms.
  • Participate actively in departmental administration through involvement in meetings and committees where appropriate and possible.
  • Provide effective communications to patients and their families, engaging them in their care planning and decisions.
  • Foster positive, respectful and collaborative relationships with students, residents and clinical, research and administrative colleagues.
Expected Hours
  • Permanent full-time, 0.8 FTE to 1.0 overall FTE with flexibility, with research protected time up to 0.6 FTE.
  • Participation in on-call schedules.
Qualifications
  • Doctorate in Medicine (or suitable equivalent such as Doctor of Osteopathy)
  • Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia
  • Coverage with Canadian Medical Protective Association
  • Proven research experience in anesthesia, pain management or perioperative medicine
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, focus on patient safety and quality
  • Additional research training/degree (Masters, PhD) is a strong asset
  • Experience in a complex health sciences centre is a strong asset
  • Sub-specialization with fellowship training and/or a demonstrated excellence in academic medicine through clinical experience
Compensation and Incentives

Compensation:
Compensation will depend on hours worked, call coverage and shift pick ups. Compensation for a 1.0 FTE position typically ranges between $420,000 to $450,000 Cdn.
The position is compensated through the Clinical Academic Funding Plan (CAFP), a multi-stakeholder agreement that provides block funding to compensate physicians and cover departmental operational costs. The Department\'s Practice Plan outlines the ways in which the revenues are distributed by the members and funding is managed by APMPM Administration Inc. a physician non-profit corporation. The position is an independent contractor and is not an employee, servant or agent of the health authorities or Dalhousie University.
