Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Feeding Futures, the Delivery Driver provides transportation of food to and from various locations within the school district as well as external sites.
Work performed as a Delivery Driver involves delivering food to various schools in time for food service as well as picking up food from external locations such as a Food Bank. The Delivery Driver is responsible for obeying traffic and safety regulations while driving in a variety of weather and road conditions. Safety and customer service are primary consideration of the job. Work is generally of a routine nature with established routes, however, additional trips, both within and outside the school district, occur.
This work involves lifting and carrying items to and from the delivery van and following an established weekly schedule of routes. Work involves a choice of methods or procedures. Unusual circumstances are referred to the Manager of Feeding Futures. The work has well defined operating procedures, methods and limits established by law, the School Board and departmental policy.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Load all delivery items into the delivery vehicle; organize for efficient access, given delivery route
Drive the established route for the day, follow the schedule

adjust the schedule when directed by supervisor to make "special" deliveries as required
Load and unload delivery items, carry them into the school or site, put them away, report delivery to office
Pick up donated food items and other food items from local locations
Deliver food to school sites in time for food service
Utilize safe lifting and carrying techniques and use hand truck where appropriate
Conduct daily pre-and post-trip inspections of the vehicle, to check the safety of basic mechanical features, as per departmental policy.
Maintain vehicle's fluids such as fuel, engine oil, coolant, etc. at the correct levels
Report any vehicle mechanical problems as soon as possible to supervisor or designate
Following departmental guidelines report any incident/accident involving the vehicle to the Manager as soon as possible
Completes food temperature checks and maintains a food temperature log
Completes basic records and report related to inspections related to the vehicle
Maintain professional, ethical behavior and confidentiality
Perform other related duties as may reasonably be expected of a person in this position
Required Qualifications:
Completion of Grade 12
Valid B.C. Class 5 driver's license; a driver's abstract to be provided semi-annually.
Required Experience:
A minimum of three (3) months' experience in a similar role
Required Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and safety precautions to be taken when driving delivery van
Sufficient physical strength to lift materials and equipment exceeding 40 (forty) pounds, ability to carry out safe working practices including the ability to use appropriate lifting and carrying techniques
Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and supervisors
Ability to work cooperatively with others including both department and other school district staff
Ability to demonstrate strong customer service skills.
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of school district operations, policies, and procedures
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Previous related experience in driving large vehicles would be an asset
Previous experience working with groups of children would be an asset
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Given the nature of the work, the driver shall not consume alcoholic beverages within 12 Hours prior to driving the District vehicle. Violation could lead to dismissal. Further, the driver will ensure that any medication, drugs, etc. that may be taken will not impair driving ability. Consultation with a physician may be necessary for this.
