Role Summary - Day Centre Worker (Temporary - 4 Months)

Through positive leadership and role modeling, the Day-Centre Worker is responsible for carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the position in accordance with the mission of St. Matt's.
The Day-Centre Worker reports to the supervisor on a day-to-day basis and is responsible for advancing the health and well-being of the people St. Matt's serves and provides ongoing social support services, crisis intervention and friendly visiting for Individuals living in poverty. The Day-Centre Worker must work with other local service agencies to ensure that the needs of individuals are being met.
The Day-Centre Worker will provide services to individuals living in poverty through case finding, assessing, planning with clients, referring, crisis intervention, supportive counseling, advocating, educating, linking with natural supports, emergency shelters and/or other professionals. The service is primarily focused on people living with serious mental illness and/or who are homeless. All duties are performed with a multidisciplinary and multiagency team approach.
Duties and Responsibilities
It is the responsibility of the Day-Centre Worker to support individuals living with mental health challenges to promote the achievement of optimal health and well-being among adults experiencing homelessness and living in the community through such activities as:
One on one contact with emphasis on individuals living in at-risk conditions.
Provide a comfortable, inclusive and welcoming environment
Support individuals with counseling and crisis intervention
Advocate on behalf of clients and/or support them to advocate for themselves
Collaborate and coordinate services with community agencies, hospitals, etc.
Connect clients to consultations with mental health professionals
Provide support in daily food services and/or support prepping food and services as needed
Create and participate in inclusive programming and engage in EDI focused community outreach for new St. Matthew's House initiatives, including new community/municipal partnerships.
Light cleaning duties as required

Skills / Knowledge / Experience
Degree or Diploma in social work, social sciences or social service work
A minimum of 2 years of experience working in a community service based non-profit organization with experience working out in the community
Experience in mental health services and other community programs
Knowledge of community resources and services, social and environmental determinants of health, health promotion, disease prevention, curative, rehabilitative, and supportive services
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Valid Certificate - Standard First Aid with Level C CPR
Completion of a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Check, within 6 months of employment start date.
Access to reliable transportation to work on site
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training is an asset
Fluent in at least one other language is an asset
Mental Effort / Working Conditions
The Day-Centre Worker's role is in a fast-paced drop-in centre environment. Some office work will also be required for writing case notes, documentation of activities, preparing monthly statistics etc.
Day Centre clients can be expected to become heightened, which may result in a frustrating work environment
There are no extenuating physical requirements for the job. The ability to lift 4.5 kg (10 lbs.) is required.
