Why is this role important?

The Data Visualization Consultant collaborates closely with CIHI business, technical and design teams to ensure that health system data presented to CIHI stakeholders and audiences is insightful, engaging, intuitive and efficient to use. They bring expert knowledge of best practices in data visualization and information design to create, improve, and advise on CIHI dashboards, reporting tools, custom visualizations, and data stories. Their advanced data storytelling abilities, expertise in using visualization tools and techniques, and expert knowledge of data models and analysis, make them uniquely positioned to create visualizations, to direct and support others, and to collaborate with CIHI teams.

What you\'ll do
  • Provides visualization and information design strategy for CIHI leadership.
  • Leads the design and development of high-quality, user-centered data visualizations.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to staff. Supervises, coaches, coordinates and monitors work, workload, and performance of staff to ensure that quality is maintained and that learning opportunities are provided. Conducts annual performance management reviews.
  • Determines optimal information design and data presentations for different audience needs across different media.
  • Creates data visualizations using best practices in design and technology, including code-based visualizations, based on audience and business needs.
  • Provides consultation to colleagues across CIHI; provides input and advice on data visualization design, techniques, and best practices; mentors and coaches other designers on data visualization creation.
  • Leads and collaborates with data architects/specialists, designers and developers; coaches, coordinates and monitors work and deliverables to ensure quality is maintained.
  • Leads the planning, coordination, development and maintenance of CIHI\'s data visualization standards, best practices, templates and process documentation; ensures alignment with corporate strategies, policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates effectively with CIHI colleagues, clients, partners and other external stakeholders on data visualization initiatives; establishes and maintains relevant professional contacts with external organizations.
  • Maintains knowledge of current and emerging data visualization development trends, best practices and techniques; provides expertise and leadership to help evolve and strengthen CIHI\'s data presentation capabilities.
  • Leads the development and presentation of internal communication and education resources to help improve data presentation practices across the organization; supports change management initiatives that drive the adoption and use of standards and best practices.
  • Supports related UX research, design and user testing processes; consistently applies design system standards in the product development process.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What you\'ll bring to the table
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field or similar specialized work experience.
  • Five years of wide-ranging data visualization and information design experience working on different products for audiences.
  • Three to five years experience working with visualization coding and technologies such as JavaScript frameworks, R and Python packages.
  • Three to five years\' experience working with data management technologies, including relational databases, large datasets, and analytical problem-solving frameworks.
  • Knowledge and experience of analytical theory and methodology.
  • Knowledge of User Experience (UX) principles and practices.
  • User-focused approach to telling data stories focused on clarity, avoiding misinterpretation, and improving usability, interaction design, and accessibility.
  • Expert data visualization implementation skills to create custom visualizations, including directing and supporting developers.
  • Data discovery skills, including workshop facilitation, to help inform data models.
  • Experience with business intelligence tools, such as Qlik (preferred), MicroStrategy, Tableau, or Power BI.
  • Familiarity with non-code and web-based visualization tools such as Everviz, Datawrapper, or Flourish.
  • Knowledge of interaction design principles and methods.
  • Knowledge of AODA and WCAG requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex ideas using storytelling techniques with words and visuals.
  • Experience working with and maintaining systematic design patterns such as design systems.
  • Proven organizational and time management skills, with an ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements.
  • Verbal and written fluency in English is required; French is an asset.
