Job Description


ROLE OVERVIEW Ocean Wise’s British Columbia Cetacean Sightings Network (BCCSN) is a citizen science initiative that collects sightings of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) and sea turtles from mariners, recreational boaters, researchers, and coastal citizens for conservation-based research. Sightings reported to the BCCSN are used for conservation-based research projects, species status reports, environmental impact assessments, and applied conservation tools such as the WhaleReport Alert System (WRAS) and EMSA (a Transport Canada maritime situational awareness tool). Accessibility and accuracy of the BCCSN database a`re key components for ensuring the availability of these data for marine conservation purposes. Being a historic citizen science-based dataset, this database is in the process of undergoing upgrades to database infrastructure to improve data processing workflow and speed of data exports. The Data Technician will be responsible for performing tasks related to database clean up, organization and consolidation prior to planned web-based data integration upgrades. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Plays a key role in the operation of the BC Cetacean Sightings Network by:

  • Facilitating the upgrade of the BCCSN’s historical MS Access database by:
    • Verifying sightings data
    • Reformatting fields and associated data
    • Consolidating duplicate observer and organization accounts
    • Identifying and completing data gaps
    • Performing error fixes throughout
  • Liaising directly with Ocean Wise’s IT department regarding progress of database upgrades
Contributes to cetacean research and enhances the scientific value of BCCSN data by:
  • Assisting with the writing of database technical report(s) as needed
  • Assisting with mapping of database sightings and performing spatial analyses in a GIS framework as needed
Consciously improves the overall organization and its processes by:
  • Continually improving our impact on the environment and greening of operations through support of EMS protocols
  • Maintaining and supporting organizational safety standards
  • Abiding by all organizational policies and procedures
  • Performing other duties of a similar nature or level

Education and Experience

  • Minimum MSc or equivalent
  • Demonstrated knowledge of database management
  • Interest in cetacean ecology and/or conservation biology
  • Interest in a primarily desk-based research position

Technical Competencies

  • Previous experience with Microsoft software (Excel, Access, Teams)
  • Previous experience with a range of database management software(s)
  • Experience with coding languages (e.g., R, Python, SQL) essential
  • Previous experience with GIS (QGIS or ArcGIS) an asset
  • Skills and/or interest in data analysis, quantitative research, and conservation
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Depending on incumbent location, there is the option to work in a hybrid work arrangement (partially from home, partially in a shared office environment) with the usual ergonomic risks of a primarily desk-based position
  • Incumbent must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they have an approved exemption and be willing to submit a proof of vaccination
  • May be required to travel to attend off-site meetings and presentations
