ROLE OVERVIEW
Ocean Wise’s British Columbia Cetacean Sightings Network (BCCSN) is a citizen science initiative that collects sightings of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) and sea turtles from mariners, recreational boaters, researchers, and coastal citizens for conservation-based research. Sightings reported to the BCCSN are used for conservation-based research projects, species status reports, environmental impact assessments, and applied conservation tools such as the WhaleReport Alert System (WRAS) and EMSA (a Transport Canada maritime situational awareness tool).
Accessibility and accuracy of the BCCSN database a`re key components for ensuring the availability of these data for marine conservation purposes. Being a historic citizen science-based dataset, this database is in the process of undergoing upgrades to database infrastructure to improve data processing workflow and speed of data exports. The Data Technician will be responsible for performing tasks related to database clean up, organization and consolidation prior to planned web-based data integration upgrades.
