. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 17 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Data Specialist is responsible for facilitating data-driven decision making within the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) by providing expert data collection, analysis, compilation and visualization to Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Leadership.
Reporting to the Manager, Quality Improvement and Accreditation, PGME.
Summary of Key Responsibilities
(job functions include but are not limited to):
Full-Stack Data Solution Development and maintenance
Design and implement comprehensive data solutions from conception to deployment
Evaluate project feasibility and recommend appropriate technology stacks for diverse use cases
Develop and maintain data architecture including storage solutions, ETL/ELT processes, and data pipelines
Create and manage semantic data models optimized for reporting and analytics consumption
Database Development and Administration
Create a relational database and modern data warehouse solutions for PGME data sources
Act as primary contact for database inquiries, access and concerns
Implement data governance practices ensuring data quality, security and compliance
Provide technical expertise on database design decisions and reporting infrastructure
Data Analysis, Reporting, and Communication
Primary resource for compiling, modeling and analyzing PGME data across multiple domains
Develop automated reporting solutions and self-service analytics capabilities
Knowledge and application of machine learning
Data extraction/reporting/analyses for all PGME activities (e.g. resident enrollments, rotation evaluations, process evaluation, administrative data, innovation and CQI metrics, benchmarking, etc.)
Create diverse data products including interactive dashboards, automated reports, analytical datasets, and custom applications as required
Design and implement data visualization solutions optimized for different user personas and use cases
Strategic Data Communication and Collaboration
Meet with stakeholders to understand requirements and translate business needs into technical solutions
Present data insights and project outcomes to PGME Leadership and committees as needed
Work with PGME Leadership and committees
Act as a resource for improved services, recommendations and practices within PGME
Work collaboratively on strategic projects related to PGME Leadership, CQI team, research committee including reporting to committees, university, government, etc. as required
Develop high-quality presentations of data, ensuring proper university branding is followed
Technology Innovation and Project Leadership
Evaluate and implement emerging technologies including AI/ML tools while maintaining appropriate ethical and privacy standards
Champion data democratization initiatives while ensuring appropriate governance and security measures
Promotes collaboration and knowledge translation with internal and external members at every opportunity
Compliance and Governance
Adhere to all university policy and regulatory requirements, including FOIP legislation and research ethics
Implement and maintain data privacy and security measures, particularly when utilizing AI-enabled solutions
Qualifications / Requirements:
Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics or other relevant discipline such as Intelligent systems/machine learning required
Have numerical skills used in a data science context, including working with numerical data in analytics and/or machine learning contexts
Minimum 5 years of experience in database creation/monitoring, database creation, statistical analysis of data, data presentation, strategic communication documentation writing and review
Proven experience designing and implementing end-to-end data solutions, encompassing data source identification, feasibility assessment, ETL technology selection, data storage architecture, data modeling, and reporting methodology
Experience with Business Intelligence applications and modern data platform tools with an emphasis on reporting, data mining, advanced analytics and self-service analytics capabilities required
Experience with aspects of Information Management such as the collection and use of information from multiple sources in both structured and unstructured formats required
Proficiency in Microsoft Fabric ecosystem including OneLake, Data Warehouse, Lakehouse, Data Pipeline, Data Flow, and Notebook and the related environments required
Advanced skills in modern data technology stack including Python, SQL, Power Query, DAX, Power BI, Tableau, RDBMS, with working knowledge of VBA/Macros required
Experience with database design, data modeling, data integration, and schema development as it pertains to PGME Leadership as required
Experience with data pipeline orchestration and workflow automation
Experience working alone as well as in a dynamic team with proven personal effectiveness and productivity is required
Strong awareness of data privacy, security, and ethical considerations when implementing AI-enabled solutions is required
Extensive experience using various methods to model relationships in data (regression, clustering, decision trees, anomaly detection, trend prediction, time-series, forecasting, etc.)
Skilled at extracting insights from complex, multi-source data environments
Expert at using inferential and descriptive statistics to guide decisions
Ability to use NLP (Natural Language Processing) to derive insights
Understanding of AI fundamentals with experience in context engineering
Good at identifying and evaluating novel, complementary data sets
