Reporting to the Director of Data Science, the Data Scientist will play a key role in advancing the growth and application of analytics, driving value for our business units. The ideal candidate will have experience in various data science techniques and a deep understanding of machine learning and big data technologies.Your business skills, and expertise in data science, and analytics tools will be critical in empowering our data-driven decision-making processes. The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver with a deep understanding of ML methodology and tools, and a passion for building robust and efficient data solutions and will work closely with data analysts, data scientists, data engineers, and business stakeholders to ensure the smooth flow of data and help deliver actionable insights.Join our team and contribute to the organization\'s success by leveraging advanced analytics to drive data-informed decisions and insights.What you will doData Science and Advanced Analytics Solution Creation:

  • Work closely with the Director Data Science and business stakeholders to shape the vision and strategy for data science at the business unit
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop ML/data science solutions that meet business needs
  • Apply descriptive, predictive, and machine learning techniques to tackle complex data problems
  • Focus on feature engineering, model training, and evaluation, and data manipulation
  • Make data-driven business recommendations and effectively communicate insights to multiple levels of stakeholders
  • Manage the design, development, and delivery of data science initiatives
  • Identify and prioritize business problems that can be solved through data analytics and drive adoption across business units and functions
  • Work with large datasets (millions of records and thousands of variables) to create clean and consistent data knowledge
  • Contribute to the growth of the data science community at Canada Life
  • Implement robust data access controls to safeguard sensitive information.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations and industry best practices.
Leadership and Mentorship:
  • Eager to understand the intricacies of our industry and proactively seek insights to drive our company\'s growth
Provide technical leadership to the data science team, guiding architectural decisions and best practices. * Collaborate with Stakeholders and work closely with data analysts, data engineers, data scientists, and business users to understand their data needs and provide the necessary support.Automation and Innovation:
  • Identify opportunities for creating data science assets, automation, and process improvement in workflows to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation in data science.
What you will bring
  • PhD/MS in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Math or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in building AI and ML solutions
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with Microsoft Azure services including Azure AI, and Databricks
  • Strong knowledge of machine learning techniques and libraries such as XGBoost, TensorFlow, Keras.
  • Experience in developing and deploying end-to-end ML pipelines in a production environment
  • Understanding of big data technologies and experience with cloud-based solutions
  • Strong data and analytics skills and experience in the product development lifecycle
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to drive data governance and architecture across the business unit
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to effectively communicate insights to stakeholders
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in an Agile development environment and working with data scientists, data engineers, and ML engineers
  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience with a range of statistical and machine learning algorithms.
Nice to Have:
  • Past experience working in an Agile delivery model
  • Past experience in life insurance, wealth management, or other financial services industry
  • Past experience in developing and deploying production-grade models in a cloud infrastructure
Given the size and scope of our organization, we have the flexibility for this position to be located in the following head office locations: Waterloo, Toronto, London.-The base salary for this position is between $61,900 - $114,500 annually. This represents base salary only and does not represent other variable compensation components of our total compensation ( i.e. annual bonus, commission etc).
