NOTE: This is a temporary position ending on or before June 25, 2025 with the possibility of extension.

NAIT Applied Research\'s Clean Technologies Team, Centre for Culinary Innovation, and Centre for Innovative Media are collaborating on a new research program devoted to helping Alberta\'s Agri-food sector create value from waste streams. This program aims to accelerate the industrial scale-up of low carbon emissions biochemical, physical, and chemical approaches to transform agricultural and food waste, by-products, and residual materials streams into high-value sustainable chemicals, fuels, and food ingredients.

Reporting to the Manager, Centre for Innovative Media, the Data Scientist will be responsible for leading the development of data science projects including coordination, implementation, execution, control, and completion of projects. This position will lead the development of data science projects including determination for data requirements, data collection, analysis using statistical models and techniques, and visualization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement data science projects including project scope, milestones and deliverables
  • Integrate data and predictive analytics, statistical methods and/or techniques to data sets
  • Prepare written reporting documents on project progress and outcomes
  • Communicate project results with internal and external stakeholders
  • Participate in training and supervision of junior staff and students
  • Assist with the grant development as a technical subject matter expert
  • Support communication and outreach activities within the Centre and research program
Skills & Abilities:
  • Demonstrated experience in large data set analysis, predictive analytics, statistical and data modeling, methodology, techniques and/or visualization
  • Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python, R, SQL)
  • Experience and/or training in artificial intelligence or machine learning is an asset
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Qualifications:
  • Related doctoral degree is recommended
  • Minimum bachelor\'s degree in a related field (Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Information Technology, Engineering) is required
  • Minimum of 4 years of direct work experience in a data science role.
  • Experience working with industry partners is preferred.

Remuneration: $2,884 - $3,846.15 bi-weekly, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Research Associate II).

This position is covered by the AUPE (Alberta Union of Provincial Employees) Collective Agreement.
