Data Scientist

Burlington, ON, CA, Canada

Job Description

At SecondShop, we're a team of Canadians who believe in doing better--for our country, your wallets, and our planet.

We started with a simple idea: why should perfectly good products go to waste or sit unsold when people like you are out there looking for smart ways to save? We have made it our mission to source the highest quality open-box, overstocked, and scratch-and-dent products from the top brands - offering them to Canadians at up to 50% off. But we are not just about savings--we're about changing how people shop. Say goodbye to paying full price and hello to smarter spending.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist - Retail to design, build, and scale data models, pricing frameworks, inventory valuation tools, and decision-support systems across SecondShop's retail and recommerce operations.

This role sits at the centre of how we make high-impact decisions: how we buy inventory, how we price it, how we allocate it across channels, how condition impacts margin and sell-through, and how to optimise our purchasing and refurbishment strategies.

The ideal candidate brings a blend of data science + engineering discipline, paired with experience supporting retail or e-commerce decision-making ideally from innovative, tech-driven consumer brands. We are scaling rapidly and investing in data, automation, and predictive modelling to drive smarter merchandising, pricing, and operational decisions. This role will play a critical part in building that capability.

What you'll be doing:

Build statistical and machine-learning models to evaluate merchandising performance, pricing sensitivity, and inventory disposition pathways. Conduct condition and attribute-level analysis to identify how product characteristics (damage types, missing parts, refurb viability) influence resale price, margin, and sell-through. Develop predictive frameworks for optimal pricing, incorporating elasticity, ageing risk, seasonality, and competitor signals. Analyse supply partner feeds and inbound inventory to forecast category performance and risk. Build models that recommend the optimal channel for each item: retail, refurb, wholesale, liquidation, etc. Quantify uplift potential for refurbishment pathways based on historical performance and cost-to-repair trends. Support ROI modelling around refurbishment vs. direct sale vs. bulk liquidation. Write advanced, production-quality SQL queries (BigQuery strongly preferred) to ingest, transform, and analyse large datasets. Collaborate with engineering to design scalable data pipelines that feed pricing engines, dashboards, and operational tooling. Communicate complex statistical findings simply, quickly, and clearly to non-technical audiences. Identify margin leakage risks and operational inefficiencies and propose corrective strategies. Build pricing and forecasting models that improve pricing accuracy and help the business realise stronger margins across categories. Use data science and engineering techniques to reduce days-in-inventory and accelerate sell-through for key product lines. Develop insights and tools that improve category-level velocity by understanding how condition, attributes, and pricing interact.

Who we are looking for

3-5+ years of experience in data science, analytics engineering, or retail data modelling. Experience in innovative consumer/retail environments is preferred Strong SQL expertise (BigQuery required or strong equivalent). Comfortable working with large retail datasets, product catalogues, pricing data, inventory movement logs, and operational systems. Background in data science, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, or a related quantitative degree. Ability to think commercially as well as technically: understands the trade-offs between speed, margin, aging, refurbishment cost, and operational capacity. Thrives in an early-stage, high-growth environment with evolving processes and high ambiguity.

What we offer:

A competitive base salary, along with a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision coverage. Access to exclusive discounts on SecondShop products for yourself and your family. As a growing startup, SecondShop offers ample opportunities to take on new challenges, contribute to shaping the company's future, and take ownership of key initiatives. Join a passionate and mission-driven team that values collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to sustainability and responsible shopping. Align with a company that believes in sustainability, smart spending, and improving the lives of Canadians. You'll have the chance to make an impact every day!
