Reporting to the Director IT, the Data Governance Specialist plays a critical role in implementing data governance frameworks, policies, and procedures to ensure the proper management, quality, and security of our credit union\'s data assets. This role will collaborate with teams across the organization to define and enforce data governance best practices at Assiniboine Credit Union. Requires strong leadership abilities, exceptional analytical skills, and a deep understanding of data governance principles and regulatory requirements in the financial industry. This role supports ACU\xe2\x80\x99s commitment to values-based banking and triple bottom line accountability in data governance and across the organization.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive data governance framework for Assiniboine Credit Union, aligning with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Define and enforce data governance policies, standards, and procedures to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of financial and member data across all systems and processes.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, including risk management, compliance, and operations, to identify and prioritize critical data elements, data owners, and data custodians.
  • Develop and maintain a data governance roadmap specific to Assiniboine Credit Union, including strategic initiatives, timelines, and resource requirements.
  • Create and implement data classification and data lifecycle management strategies to enable effective handling, retention, and disposal of member and financial data.
  • Establish data governance metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of data governance initiatives and identify areas for improvement within the credit union.
  • Conduct regular data quality assessments and audits to identify data quality issues within Assiniboine Credit Union and develop remediation plans.
  • Responsible for coordinating external audit requirements.
  • Stay up to date with industry best practices, emerging trends, and regulatory requirements related to data governance, data privacy, and data protection in the financial industry.
  • Collaborate with IT teams at Assiniboine Credit Union to ensure the implementation of appropriate data governance controls, data access controls, and data protection mechanisms.
  • Provide guidance and support to business users and data stakeholders at Assiniboine Credit Union on data governance practices, tools, and technologies.
  • Develop and drive data governance awareness and training programs specific to Assiniboine Credit Union to promote a data-driven culture and ensure adherence to data governance principles across the organization.
  • Demonstrates understanding of ACU\xe2\x80\x99s commitment to values-based banking, respectful workplace and diversity and inclusion.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

The competencies for the position would typically be acquired through a Bachelor\'s degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Data Science, or a related field. A master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in any of the above fields is an asset. A minimum of 5 years of experience working in a data governance or data management role, preferably in the financial industry. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires an expert understanding of:
  • Strong knowledge of data governance principles, best practices, and industry standards in the context of financial institutions.
  • Familiarity with data privacy regulations (e.g., PIPEDA, OSFI guidelines) and their implications on data governance within a credit union.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing data governance frameworks, policies, and procedures in the financial sector.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail, particularly in relation to financial and member data.
  • Strong leadership abilities with the capability to influence and drive change across Assiniboine Credit Union.
  • Solid understanding of data management concepts, data modeling, and data integration techniques in the financial industry.
  • Proficiency in data governance tools such as Microsoft Purview and technologies relevant to financial institutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders within Assiniboine Credit Union.
  • Certifications in data governance, data management, or related fields are a plus.
