Job Summary
The Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) holds a unique data linkage that combines administrative health and education records, HELP\xe2\x80\x99s survey data on children\xe2\x80\x99s wellbeing, and Canadian immigration records. This database was created to examine developmental trajectories of children and youth, and understand which social, cultural, and socioeconomic factors are associated with good health, high wellbeing, and/or academic achievement. The Research Assistant performs quantitative analyses of data and provides support and coordination for research activities and deliverables for CIHR and SSHRC-funded projects. The analyses will include multilevel modelling and multiple regressions (e.g., examine the relationship between social, cultural, and socioeconomic variables and indicators of children\xe2\x80\x99s health, wellbeing, and academic achievement).

Organizational Status
This position is responsible for supporting and coordinating research and collaboration activities related to the CIHR and SSHRC-funded research projects and reports to the Associate Professor (PI) of the project.

Work Performed

Major responsibilities include:

• Analyses of developmental trajectories
• Analyses of socioeconomic data in relation to developmental trajectories
• Conducts literature searches on developmental health outcomes for children and youth in the Canadian and international context
• Subgroup analyses that employ statistical methods such as multi-group CFA/SEM, latent class analysis, and multilevel mixture modelling
• With the support of the project team writes summaries, introductions, method and result sections for journal articles.
• Prepares summaries and presents findings to project team, and as appropriate presents at conferences/research meetings and community meetings.
• Contributions to/co-authorship of academic publications (preparation of method and result sections; manuscript writing)
• Assistance with all aspects of grant applications

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Works within well-defined guidelines and procedures, but exercises judgment in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion; new or unusual problems are referred to supervisor. Exercises initiative, tact and judgement in handling matters of a routine and non-routine nature. Works with conflicting demands and determines priorities. Must respect confidentiality of information handled. Errors or incorrect work or decisions as a result of incompleteness, missed deadlines, lack of attention to details etc., could result in lost opportunities and delays for other staff or embarrassment to the Director, Deputy Director or HELP. Damage to HELP\xe2\x80\x99s reputation may occur if the incumbent does not deal tactfully and helpfully with faculty affiliates, University Departments or Institutions, government, or community members.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Education

University degree in population health, psychology, or measurement, or any other area related to children\xe2\x80\x99s developmental health preferred. Knowledge in the area of social determinants of health, early childhood, neighborhood effects, and/or cross-cultural comparisons.

Experience

Experience with population health databases (including coding and analysis of administrative education and health records) and with multilevel analyses, or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Knowledge of University policies and procedures and experience conducting literature reviews preferred. Knowledge and interest in early child development, health, socioeconomic gradients, cultural diversity and a background in neighbourhood effects research an asset.

Skills

• Experience with population health databases and multilevel analyses
• Statistical knowledge, including software experience with SPSS, SAS, MPlus, HLM, and/or R
• Experience with literature reviews; reference software
• Academic writing experience (thesis and/or scientific publications)
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
